I picked up a basketweave marshall 4x12 that was made around '70 - '72.
It has the little "100" up in the left corner. When I opened it up,
the greenbacks are plain - no label - never had them. What's the deal?
I have older marshall cabs w greenies that have labels. The reissue
greenies have labels. Anyone familiar with these unlabeled greenies?
What's the story?

Thanks in advance.

Joe, I don't have any info on label-less Greenbacks, but...

I do have Greenbacks from '71, '73, '77, and '68 and they all have
labels. Maybe they were removed by a reconing service. You
might check to see if the cone is original; should have a white
stamped number on the back like "102-3", "H1777", "102-014", or
possibly "444". "W1009" cones are commonly found in US re-coned
Celestions. The glue coat on the _front_ of the cone surround is
generally much neater on original cone Celestions, if you want
to remove one. It should also have a "T.1221" stamp on the
front gasket and again on the frame or the magnet housing (under
the cover), if it is a 25 watt G12M Greenback.
There would also
be a date code stamped on the frame saying something like "BD 21",
where the letter D indicates 1971, the B is the month, in this
case February, and the 21 is the day of the month. Sometimes
the day of the month is excluded or put in front of the "Month/Year"
stamp.

Basically, for the year, it goes: A=1968, B=1969, C=1970,
D=1971, E=1972, etc.

Maybe the factory just ran out of the labels and need to ship
speakers anyway!
