Heard the same thing, Why is it always "the talented ones first" ?
I've always loved his music and concept,
Everybody check out his recent 96 Cd "ORACLE" , feels like you hear him play
as if you were INSIDE the guitar.
Miss him already...

I hadn't heard that, but I did a quick search on Yahoo and was sorry to
find that you're right. Here's an excerpt from the news article:

Guitarist dies in car accident
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3 (UPI) _ The California Highway Patrol says acoustic
guitarist and composer Michael Hedges has been killed in an automobile
accident in rural Mendocino County.
The Windham Hill musician, known for his two-handed style of play,
recorded several albums, including last year's ``Oracle.'' He was
scheduled to perform in the Guitar Summit Tour beginning in January.
Officials say Hedges' body was discovered Tuesday morning in his wrecked
1986 BMW on State Route 128, about 100 miles northwest of San Francisco.
Authorities say Hedges' car likely skidded off a curve and down an
embankment several days earlier.

I had the opportunity to see MH live a couple years ago. Very
inspirational. He'll be sorely missed.

That's a damn shame. I saw him play about 10 years ago, opening up for
Leo Kottke, here at the Schubert (now the Merriam) Theater in Philadelphia.
What a show. I hesitate to say he blew Leo away, because their styles
were so different, but being in high school, I really dug the faster, more
percussive stuff he was doing--probably as much as Leo's playing, maybe
more at the time. And I had never even heard of him before.
They came out and did "8 Miles High" together for an encore.
I'll never forget it.

What lesson can we glean from otherwise sad moment this boys and
girls? Easy -- when a musician you admire comes to town, SEE THEM! Do
not hesitate. Do not rationalize. Do NOT tell yourself that you'll see
them next time they come through -- just do it!

This is truly sad. Michael Hedges is one of my all-time favorite
guitarists. He'll be sadly missed. My condolences to his friends,
family, and fans.

I know this to be all too true. I was to see SRV but canceled cos' I had
broken up with my boyfriend at the time. SRV died shortly thereafter, and I'm
still kicking myself for not going to that concert. I had seen him years before
that, but from what I heard his playing was so much better towards the end of
his life. An opportunity wasted on my part.

Agreed. I used to do stage work in Boston and Miles Davis played at
the Opera House and though I wasn't on the crew call, I could easily
have gone down and seen the show (for free no less) and I just didn't
get my lazy ass up and on the Red Line. Within a short period
thereafter, he was gone. I'll always regret that one.

the same thing happened to me. I could have gone to a dead show (i never
went to one) and I thought, naw i don't need to go to this show they'll be
back in the fall, of course that august Jerry Died. I'm still kicking
myself for that one.

First of all, I am still in shock about hearing of the passing of Michael
Hedges. I have been a fan since 1987 (when I first heard of him). One of the
guys I went to music school with could play one of his tunes (Ragamuffin). It
was unlike anything I'd ever heard.
I have a few fond memories regarding Mr. Hedges. The first one was when he
came to do a clinic at Duquesne University School of Music (my undergrad). He
walked in the door, and was one of the most "interesting" looking people I've
ever met. He was wearing torn jeans, and what looked like bright red long
underwear poking through the holes in the knees. Plus a funky hat, and
S-H-I-N-Y black shoes. (He could have easily walked off the stage of a modern
theatre presentation...his attire was so unique). Anyway, he spent part of the
time talking to us about composition, theory...and all of that sort of stuff.
Brought up a few anecdotes of some of the lessons he took with Pat Martino, and
other things we were just trying to attempt to comprehend.
Then he pulled out his guitar and played for us....
I swear to God, it was one of the scariest things I've ever seen in my
life. That man BREATHED music. He things that were 10X as crazy as any punk
musician I've ever heard of. He'd strum, slap, tap, knock, pluck, whack...that
guitar...in a complex, unique, and totally musical way. It was just amazing.
Then a few years later he came back to Pittsburgh, and had a gig at one of
the clubs around town (Grafitti I believe). He was unique to say the least.
Half way through the show, he stopped and did some improv poetry, and contorted
his body in bizzare "yoga" type positions. Totally bohemian.
R.I.P. Michael Hedges. You will be very much missed. But your music will live
on.

I'm sad as well. The guy was defintely unique and wrote/played wonderful
music. Still, nobody said anything about the the horrible risks one takes
when they get in a car. Over 50,000 people die in auto-accidents a year
in this country. That's worse then AIDS deaths and no crisis seems to be
felt.
I realize that cars are an integrated and ingrained feature of our culture
(I have one as well, as much as I hate driving it...) but lets recognize
when something is dangerous and hazardous to your health.
Carol
So true. I still kick myself for not going to see Muddy Waters the last
time he came through.
pH
Yeah. And as Sharon said, SRV. I did manage to see Dizzy before he
passed on.
BTW to all: I inadvertently marked all messages read in this
newsgroup (*sigh*), so if you replied to something of mine and want me
to see it, you might let me know.
Eh?
I got hooked on MH in the early eighties (a year or two after I "found"
Windham Hill records.) He played Tulane University along with Liz Story and
a couple of other WH artists in late 1985. I went to see Michael, not only
because I absolutely loved the music, but because I KNEW he couldn't play
live what I heard on the LP.
Boy, was I ever wrong. :)
It was the one of the first dates I had with the young woman who became my
wife. Great concert, great memories. I will sorely miss Michael Hedges.

Yeah, but lets look at it in perspective:-
1. Most people drive cars more often than they make love
2. Most people spend much more time in a motor vehicle than they do
making love!
Think about it,
