By the way, the book includes the following transcriptions, in
standard notation and really good tab notation:
Maple Leaf Rag, Gladious Rag, Heliotrope Bouquet(my favorite), The
Entertainer, Pleasant Moments, The Easy Winners, Lily Queen, Sunflower
Slow-Drag and Elite Syncopations.

Check out David Qualey if, like me, you never heard of him before. He
is the guitarist a lot of us would like to be.
Chen,
Thanks for the test drive of some new fingerstyle players. I'm
always looking for new inspiration/influence.
A couple of things (since you were looking for comments):
1) I wish they were full length songs rather than just cuts that
are 1-1.5 minutes in length. If you have the artist's permission,
why not go full bore and put up the whole song?
2) A couple of the RAM's are the same even though they are intended
to be different tracks. Check out Don Ross's That'll Be The Phone
and the next available track on that CD (don't remember the name of
the ram right off).
3) I really liked Isato Nakagawa's stuff - BIG SOUND! Very tasty.
Are you able to get Dream Catcher where you live? If so, maybe we
can talk trade (one of my CD's for that one).
Thanks + Keep Picking,
Steven Dillon

Hi Steven,
i don't know the music of Isato Nakagawa. I only have heard of him. If
you are looking for "Dream Catcher", it is published by "Acoustic
Music Records"(Peter Finger, a well known guitarist).
Have a look at Michael Langer's CD "Crossing Over".
Michael Langer has a WebSite:
http://members.magnet.at/michael.langer/
Michael is able to play all styles. From folk, blues, jazz and latin
rhythm. For me, Crossing Over is his best record. Michael plays nylon
stringed guitars(am i wrong ?)

Yes, that would be me. Thank you. The goal of this effort was to do
justice to one of America's greatest composers.
For what is in my opinion definitive Joplin, I turn to my recordings
of pianist Dick Hyman. (Recall that he has done soundtracks for Woody
Allen.) On the last side of my old LP set of Joplin/Hyman is all
improvisations on Joplin. This could have been disastrously mishandled
by any lesser musician, but Hyman's brilliant work actually enhances
one's concept of the music, in my opinion. It is a summation of 20th
century piano jazz, and how can a thing get any better than that?

Heliotrope Bouquet is an intriguing piece. Here is my take on it:
The first section presages the kind of cocktail jazz you started to
hear in bars in the 1950s. The next section is a very sultry
softshoe--great stripper music. The last section, if speeded up a bit,
could be something Radio City's Rockettes might dance to with high leg
kicks etc.
I have my old work tape on that. One criticism I have of it is that I
started pushing the tempo in the last section, thinking of the
Rockettes, I guess. I'll dub it to MP3 and post it to show you what I
mean.

First , thanks for your comment.
Right , I also think with the full music clips , people can contact
feel the music more directly and completely.
In fact , there are two main reason why I didn't offer the full length
music clips : One was that I didn't discuss this topic with guitarists
separately and they all perfered to the part music clips.(1~1.5 mins)
The other was that recording the full length song would occupy much
more space of the serve I applied to.
As you know , this website is not commercial and non-benefited , so
I can only apply to the free space which was always not enough I think.
As for the full song , I think I can discuss with the guitarists and
at least offer one full song from each album.
2) A couple of the RAM's are the same even though they are intendedto be different tracks. Check out Don Ross's That'll Be The Phoneand the next available track on that CD (don't remember the name ofthe ram right off).
Thanks so much for your carefulness to point out my fault and I have
corrected it just a moment.
3) I really liked Isato Nakagawa's stuff - BIG SOUND! Very tasty. Are you able to get Dream Catcher where you live? If so, maybe wecan talk trade (one of my CD's for that one).
Yes, I can get this album here easily and willing to get this CD for
you for trade.
Thanks again for you mail and happy to make friend with you.
P.S. You can call me"Chen-Shiun" directly which is my first name.

Thanks, Chen-Shiun, for the great site on fingerstyle players. I plan to
visit often.
You may also be interested in my Nylon-String Jazz Guitarists site
(http://www.jeffgower.com/nylon.html) because it lists links to the
websites of over 70 nylon-string jazz/pop players, nearly all of whom are
fingerstylists.
Alot of great players out there!
Best wishes,
Jeff

Hi Steven,

Helmut,
I could not find Isato Nakagawa's Dream Catcher CD on Amazon
or cdnow. I also searched using a couple of search engines
and wasn't able to turn up much info on him. He seems to have
been around since the 70's though (one site had albums from him
with what appeared to be release dates from that long ago!).
Have a look at Michael Langer's CD "Crossing Over".Michael Langer has a WebSite:

Thanks, I listened to the MP3's he had on his page. "Lost Nails
Groove" was cool, especially for a nylon stringed guitar.
Keep Picking,
Steven Dillon
Chen-Shiun,
Thanks for the link to AMR. I was able to find Isato's
Dream Catcher at least listed in their catalog. I'll try to
pick it up from them.
Thanks again for sharing some new fingerstyle music with us.
Keep Picking,
Steven Dillon

Steven, here is my suggestion:
If you cannot get "Dream Catcher" in your country, i would order it
for you here in Germany.
In the styles of classical Ragtime, my "three" favorite pieces are:
- Heliotrope Bouquet
- Solace, a Mexican Serenade
- Echoes from the Snowball Club
Naturally, there are a lot of fantastic classical ragtime
compositions.
Helmut,
What/who's arrangement of Solace are you playing?
John Sorell

Arranged by Tim Nicolai:(Classic Ragtime Guitar Solos, by Stefan
