I am looking for a fuzz that isn't quite the stereotypical Hendrix sound. I
own a Fulltone 70's Pedal (which I'm selling in case anybody's interested)
and have tried a Fuzzface, but want to get away from Hendrix-style fuzzes
and into wierder territory. I would like something that adds "fuzz" (as
opposed to a distortion pedal like a Rat or Fulldrive2). But I don't want
to totally get drowned out if I'm playing something a little more complex
than power chords or blues scales (which happens occasionally ;-). The best
way I can describe what I hear in my head and want coming out of my amp is
Red-era King Crimson.
Any suggestions besides a $3000 custom amp or Roland VG-8? ;-)

Hi Stevie Carl,
I've been playing around with a friend's Boss GX-700. Pretty amazing
little gizmo. It's got a Hendrix-style fuzz preset, but the GX-700
allows you to edit the presets, so you can tweak your fuzz however
you like and add delay, pitch-shifting, flanging or whatever. I'm sure
you could concoct some pretty Frippertronic sounds with this effect
processor.
BTW, the GX-700 has presets that claim to emulate the sound of classic
tube amps: Marshall stack, Twin, 5150, Soldano, even Matchless. I've always
been skeptical about these kinds of grandiose claims from little
digital boxes, but these presets sounded GREAT. Anybody elses had any
experience with the GX-700?

the boss fz-2 hyper-fuzz pedal is the "fuzziest" fuzz pedal i have played.
it is unique sounding. it might be what you are looking for. i have one bu
don't use it much. it sounds too "synthetic." i like the big muff

Yikes, I actually had one and didn't like it at all. Primarily it was
because of the reverb section. Really bad reverb and noisy as well. I
upgraded it after a week for the higher-end roland unit, the GP-1 I think?
It was like to the big-brother of the GX-700. I eventually sold that
because I was bored with rack-mounted stuff and liked the sound of my
pedals. For recording or straight into a board the GX-700 would be OK if
you used a real reverb and disabled all the GX-700 reverbs. But to use with
a guitar amp (like my Twin) I wasn't into it at all, and thought the
Digitech RP-10 was a better match (although like I said, I'm back to all
pedals now).

A Foxx tone machine, that could be what he used back then.
Adrian Belew and many others used one. the Ace Tone
fuzz master is also a cool old early 70s fuzz, sort of octavia
like.

Friend from my old band used to get a very Fripp-like sound, though, out
of just the Rat that you don't care for.
Note that a lot of the sound for Fripp came with not just a fuzz, but a
wah pedal and Marshall distortion also. Not to mention sheer volume.
Fripp claimed in a <Guitar Player> interview that he could get that
sound out of any fuzz he'd ever tried, but as this was in the early 70's
you'd likely want something that aims for that era.
I quite like the DOD Classic Fuzz, but there are a lot of other options
these days.

No, actually I like the Rat quite a bit, it's the Fulltone 70's pedal I'm
bored with (IMHO, I don't want anymore flames from full...@aol.com ;-)
But I use the Rat as more of a Marshall, heavy-overdrive kind of pedal, not
really a fuzz. I'm just going to try out a few more, probably the Boss,
DOD, and new Sovtek Muff Pi; although everything's a little too Hendrix-y
when you get into fuzzes. The closest I have found to what I want so far is
a Vox wah-wah but it doesn't have an AC adapter jack so I'll have to see if
my electronics work is up for adding one!
I've been testing them out in an attempt to add a do*it*all
sort of box into my guitar rig and have found it to be pretty
amazing for what it costs. The ring modulator is great... The
mic simulators and amp simulators are fairly versatile.
If you're a control freak: You can only assign 4 controllers
in any one patch. With everything from distortion to delay and
reverb in one patch, that's not much. I'm probably going to get
one myself though cause I can always cross-fade to other pre's
in my rig.
I'd like to take one home for the real taste test!
Cheers,
Miko
