Or how bad?
Hi Everybody!
I spent a fruitless several hours looking for prices on the net for new
Peaveys. Nobody even seems to confess to selling them. I'm thinking of
getting a second guitar. I've played the same old Fender (jag) for 21
years. I'm thinking of getting something with a longer scale and maybe
wider neck. The pictures of the Peavey Impact Firenza AX (they need longer
names, doncha think?) at their website look really cool. The Used Peaveys
listed online seem really cheap, I mean like they can't GIVE 'em away. I
had a Peavey guitar about 10 years ago, a natural finish ash, strat-type,
that seemed ok. Have they gotten worse?
Any ideas on where I could see one in person? Or should they be avoided all
together? I'm in the northern Virginia area.
TIA
Casey

First off, Peavey either prohibits or at least storngly discourages mail order.
This is to protect the local dealers who have franchises.

List prices can be found included with subscription copies of Peavey's Monitor
magazine, check their web site at www.peavey.com for info on how to get copies
of Monitor (the free copies distributed in stores do NOT include the price list).
They can probbaly direct you to a nearby dealer as well.

Peavey guitars range from OK, but nothing special, to very nice, but like ALL
guitars, you need to try them yourself to decide if it's the guitar for YOU.

The low prices have to do with two things: in general, Peavey has aggressive pricing,
they have to because if they want to compete with Fender, Gibson, etc. who have powerful
reps amonst guitarists, they need to offer something as an incentive (a lower price). However,
many guitarists HATE Peavey gear, this accounts for the low used prices. End result is
that used Peavey guitars can be great bargains.

I have played on Peavey guitars on / off since 1980 when the T-15 and T-60
units were the top of the line. I currently play on the Telecaster and
Stratocaster copies. I have both the top of the line versions and Korean
version of those guitars. The Peavey's in my estimation are better than
the guitars they're copying. I personally own a 55 Telecaster and it's
nowhere near the quality and playability of the Peavey counterpart.

That's my two-cents worth. As far as pickups are concerned I haven't had
much to complain about those. The electronics leave a small bit to be
desired. Usually cleaning those up cleans up any sound problems that I have
experienced.

One of the nicest guitars I've ever played is the Peavey Odyssey. This
was a set neck guitar with a figured maple top, 3 per side head stock etc.
Kind of a poor man's PRS vibe. I think they listed for about a grand. I
spoke to a guy who had just sold one back to the dealer that he bought it
from for $200., because after several months of advertising he didn't even
get a response. I don't think that there were many of these made but they
are definately worth looking at should one come along.
