"Strings West", aka Larry Briggs, of Tulsa Oklahoma
"Imperial Guitar & Soundworks," of Newburgh, NY
If you've had good or bad experiences w/these dealers
in person or by mail, I'd like to hear about it!
thanks...
I have never purchased a guitar from Larry, but when I lived in
Tulsa SW ("Guitars for Stars") was my favorite music store in
the city. He had a truly awesome collection of flotsam and jetsam
in there, along w/ some really cool instruments. Used to be you
could walk in off the street and buy something. Last time I
checked, you had to make an appointment w/ him to see anything.
I think he (and many other dealers) have gotten so used to the
easy sale to people w/ copious dollars who care more about the
investment value than playability of any given instrument. You
pretty much have to sound very willing to spend when you call
'em; there may be another customer on that other line. I'd
probably still go by SW if I was in the market, but the key is
that I'd GO BY before I BUY. I did once buy a balalaika from Larry.
Talked him down quite a bit on that one :) And when I was in high
school he let me trace a korina Flying V so that I could build
one in high school--even then I couldn't afford a vintage guitar!
Anyway, YMMV and all that, but I personally will (probably) never
buy a guitar that I can't first play.
Stay Tuned,
