Tim Hardin wrote the song and recorded the best (IMHO) version on "Tim
Hardin 3 Live". I think the familiar version that got a lot of AM play
was by Bobby Darin.

Does anyone remember the name of the artist who wrote
or recorded the old song "If I were a Carpenter" (I'm not sure
if thats the correct title)? I heard a local band do this song
with a harder rock sound than the original and it sounded
great, but I couldn't remember who did the song originally back
in the late 60's I believe. Any help is most appreciated.
I have it listed in my guitar chord book as
Bobby Darin, but written by Tim Harding. For such a beautiful sounding
song, it's too bad it is so demeaning and sexist. Real easy to play too.

I not sure if it is the same song but Robert Plant recorded a version of it on his
last solo album called Fate of Nations.

Song done, perhaps most notable, by Leon Russel

As did Johnny Cash and also Bobby Darrin but you'll have to go
to the old record stores to find them.

Don't know about Robert Plant version but if it's the folk original you
are talking about, it was written early/mid-60's by Tim Hardin -
American singer/songwriter (b. 23 Dec 1941 d. 29 Dec 1980). This song was
a hit for the Four Tops, Bobby Darin and has been covered by others and
has gotta be close to a folk standard which a lot of us 'cut our teeth
on'. He also wrote 'Reason to Belive' which you will remember was a big
hit for Rod Stewart a little while back. Bob Dylan's album 'John Wesley
Harding' (1968) was rumoured to have been influenced by Hardin.
Hardin died of a drug overdose 1980 in L.A.

Hope this helps.

And I haven't heard it by either of them.

The version I thought was the best known was by Johnny Cash.

Among the others listed as recording it, Bob Seger did a nice cover of it on
an early album (Smokin OP's).. Always liked that version..

I know a version by Johnny Cash, but he has got a lot of covers,
so I don't know ...

Maybe this helps you.

There was a really neat version by (I think) The Casuals too.

kev...@ihug.co.nz (Kevin Daly) has written:
No - they did Xanadu (not the O-fig-newton song) It had a great whip
snap sound effect in it.
Tim Hardin wrote the song and many have recorded it. Most recently,
Francis Dunnery on his second CD - Tall Blonde Helicopter.
