I'm working on recording a bunch of banjo tunes. One that I really would
like to get my hammer-claws into is : Play that funky music, white boy.
You know, the 70's funk-spoof. What is the tunes real name, and who did it?

G'day Mitch

Was the original of Play that Funky Music done by Disco Tex and the
Sexolets, I'm not really sure.

But, if you're a banjo player who'd like to send up that song, you should
listen to a cover that was done by Australian thrash country legends, The
Fargone Beauties on their 1992 CD "It's Hard When You're Ugly".

They've rechristened it Play That Country Music and they've used the theme
from Rawhide as the break in the middle. It is a gem.

Their banjo player, Mark Collins, is worth listening to at any time.

Cheers

I think the original was Average White Band, (ca. 1980?)

LOL!

Actually, I'm pretty sure that it was Wild Cherry. Vanilla Ice may have
covered it, but I never heard it, thank God.

Is it Wild Cherry's version in the Intel cleanroom TV
commercial? The version in the commercial seems funkier
than Wild Cherry's version (as I remember it). In fact,
when I saw this commercial, I thought, "I've got to
get this version of the song." But I don't want to
spend on the Wild Cherry version unless that's the one.

It's one and the same. I've got the album on vinyl...bought it as a kid
when it first came out!! And my band has been doing it as a set closer
for over a year (and getting quite a response, seeing it's WAY out of our
style...)

PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC Wild Cherry
Guitar Intro:
Hey do it now yeah hey

Verse 1
Yeah, There was a funky singer Playin' in a rock & Roll Band

And never had no problems yeah Burnin' down one night stands

And everything around me, yeah

Got to stop to feelin' so low And I decided quickly, Yes I did

To disco down and check out the show Yeah they was

Chorus

Dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin'

And just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted

Play that funky music white boy

Play that funky music right

Play that funky music white boy

Lay down that boogie and play that funky music till you die

Till you die , oh till you die

Spoken ( Gonna play that electified funky music ,, yeah )

Guitar Solo

Verse 2

Spoken: Hey wait a minute Now first it wasn't easy

Changin' Rock & Roll and minds And things were getting shaky

I thought I'd have to leave it behind

But now its so much better ( spoken: its so much better )

I'm funking out in every way

But I'll never lose that feelin' ( spoken: no I won't)

Of how I learned my lesson that day

When they were.....

Chorus (Repeat)

They shouted play that funky music

Play that funky music

Play that funky music

Gotta keep on playin' funky music

Play that funky music ( Fade )
