Does anyone here happen to recall an old comedy special on Showtime (the
cable channel) entitled "Stephen Banks' Home Entertainment Center"? It was a
truly glorious program that ran, I believe, in the late 1980s or early '90s.
In the course of the show, Stephen Banks played a number of tunes on a
variety of instruments, most of which (the songs, that is) were really quite
clever. Does anyone happen to recall the lyrics or know the music to any of
these songs? Specifically, I'm thinking of one, accompanied by a simple bass
climb, that went something vaguely like this:
<short introductory verse, which I can't remember, about musicians
having a habit of dying>
Buddy Holly died at twenty-two,
And if your plane hits a mountain, you'll die too.
They say that rock and roll is here to stay, but
Rock and rollers pass away.
Karen Carpenter died at thirty-two,
And if you don't eat a thing, you know that you'll die, too.
<something like the last two lines in the last verse>
Marvin Gaye died at forty-four.
His father shot him point-blank on the floor.
<something else similar to before>
...and so on, with another verse about Elvis, I believe.
If anyone knows anything about these songs, or even recalls the program, could
you please either post or e-mail me back? I'd appreciate any help I could get
in recapturing this important bit of my past. Thanks.

Marvin Gaye died at 44..
His father shot him point blank, on the floor.
So if you beat up your dad..
Do a good job, then run out the door.
That is the only complete verse I can remember!
I used to have 2 of his hbo specials on tape, and misplaced them
somewhere. Those were hilarious. Have you ever seen them?
Stephen Banks died at 105..
He was the greatest rock-and-roller of all time
It's just too bad
Nobody saw him in his prime...
I remember and absolutely loved that show! I taped it about five years
back. I'll see if I can find it and send you those lyrics.
