I woke up this morning (in best blues tradition) with a song on my brain. The
song is called "Shipbuilding" and was written by a guy in a wheelchair from
the north of England in the late 70's/early 80's. Who was he ?? Someone Wyatt
? Did either Billy Bragg or Kirstie Macall do versions of it ?? If you know
please mail me as not knowing is crazing me something chronic. If anyone has a
TAB of this lovely melancholic tune I'd be very grateful. It's not on the
server. Many thanks,

If this is the song I am thinking of, it was done by Elvis Costello in the early
80's (don't have the album it's on, but it's on his Greatest Hits from 1985). If
so, I alawys thought it was written by EC, but it might not be since he has
covered many people's songs (eg. "Waht's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love & Understanding",
"Can't Stand Up For Falling Down", etc.). I'll look it up at home tonight and let you
know (e-mail me with your e-mail address and I reply via e-mail). Unfortunatly,
I have not idea to the TAB. Sorry!

There is a Robert Wyatt version of the song, but it is actually by Elvis
Costello - And I think the Costello version is much better. I've asked for the
chords about a week ago, but got no answer (yet...)

Elvis Costello did a song called shipbuilding that fits your description...
Something like:
Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday

I wish I knew the chords or even the lyrics (they're quite muddy in his
recording)...it's on his greatest hits album...

Indeed, Robert Wyatt (used to be the drummer of a very famous Jazz-rock band,
that even Kevin Ayers played with) is the author and first interpreter of the
song Shipbuilding, (which handles about the Falkland-war).

Elvis Costello made a very good version.

Elvis Costello being lyricist and Clive Langer being composer. Langer gave
Costello the music and Elvis went away to write the words. It's one of the
only good songs on otherwise his worst album, IMHO. Pooooor. "Shipbuilding"
is a beautiful song, though, testament to Costello's ability to write a
lyric about a social concern that truly packs an emotional punch as well
as transcending rhetoric.

It's just a rumor that was spread around town, a telegram or a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be reopening the shipyard
And notifying the next of kin, once again
It's all we're skilled in

Not wishing to be pedantic....
Robert Wyatt *did* do the first version of it, but it was written (or at least
the words were) by Elvis Costello. Elvis's version came a little later, and
I remember an interview where he said that he considered Robert Wyatt's to
be the original version, and his the cover....so you were nearly right.
