Monday, Nov 6, I was able to get on the D'A website and order an Excel1
(single floating p/u) in Natural.
The next morning, after spending more time on the website, decided I
wanted to find out more about the Excel1-DP, and that I liked the
Vintage Natural better. I called them, managed to get Kyle on the
phone, and changed my order after hearing about the fancier aesthetics
on the DP.
Wednesday morning I called them to ask if they could ship that day so I
could use the guitar on a weekend gig. He told me no problem, and sure
enough, I got a tracking number a few hours later.
On Friday the guitar arrived. Except it was the original one - not the
one I had changed it to. Ooops. Oh yeah, and the pickup was working
only intermittently. The guitar was beautiful though, w/o a blemish
that I could find.
I called Kyle the following Monday, he apologized and told me he would
send the right one out, along with a shipping label so that I could
return the first one. I really appreciated that he didn't require me
to send that one back first before shipping out the replacement.
The replacement was shipped Thursday and arrived yesterday (Monday). I
much prefer the Vintage Nat'l, though the trim might be considered a
bit over the top by some. I did like the unplugged sound much better
on the replacement as well. And the pickup worked.
Bottom line, I agree with other posters that have said that D'A direct
wasn't probably ready to go prime-time - they are inefficient and
probably overwhelmed. But Kyle seems like a nice enough guy and both
of the guitars that I rec'd were gorgeous w/o any single blemish that I
could find. This is my first 17" archtop and I love it. I can't look
at it w/o wanting to play it for at least an hour, which is always a
good sign. The setup of the guitar is absolutely fine.
Anyway, for those that were concerned about working with them, I think
they mean well but are still working out a lot of bugs in the ordering
/ shipping process. Best way to contact them is by phone.. just keep
trying.
