If you're asking about the Evans TE, you must listen before buying, IMHO. The
TE's sound character is totally different from the other Evans amps, with a lot
of upper midrange emphasis. I think that the MegaBrute sounds better than this
amp for jazz guitar. If you want to make a Tele sound twangier, this might be
your amp, but I don't see it as a jazz guitar amp. Talk to Bill Fender at
legato...@erols.com . Bill sells both and he'll give you the straight scoop
on their relative sounds and merits.
A few months ago someone on the group raved about their new Evans TE. They must
have heard something that I didn't.
Another fairly small amp, lighter than the TE, but not as small and light as
the MegaBrute, is the SWR Strawberry Blonde. This has a really nice, full sound
for a small combo amp. I think SWR makers their own drivers and they've got a
nice little 8" or 10" in the SB.
All these amps are constrained by their small speakers and cabinets when
compared to the best full sized set ups, like the Raezer's Edge cabs and the
Evans and Webb combos.
Happy hunting,
Dave
I can't speak directly to the model with the 8" speaker, but I have an
Evans 80 that I'm very happy with. It's not the loudest thing in the
world, but it suits my needs quite well (I'm a hobbyist-level player,
and I play with a big band and with small, mostly acoustic combos).
Best wishes to all,

I did try an AE200 (with 2 -8's) and thought it sounded quite good
when I recently picked-up my JE150 from Jim Mapson (generous discounts
and a gem of a guy to deal with). The magnets in the 8" were quite
small in proportion compared to the Evans eclipse 10" or 12" speakers
which did not appeal to me. The AE200 is wide and short. Built on
the Evans 200 chassis, it sorta looks like a boom-box.
The 1999 JE150 with the Eclipse 12" speaker was the best choice, for
me, in an Evans combo.
A footnote: a SoCal pro that I know took his TE, ported the rear of
the cabinet and replaced the 10" Eclipse speaker with a lightweight
12" speaker. Sounded like a Polytone on steroids.

That someone likely was me. I don't understand how you would call the
TE anything but a jazz guitar amp. What else would you use it for?
I get complements on my sound just about every time I play out so I
must not be alone in my appreciation of the TE as a jazz amp.
Just to clarify, the TE is a 150 watt combo with a 10" speaker, so it
is probably not the amp that Steve is inquiring about. I've heard
about the 8" Evans a few times but I don't know anything about it.
(except maybe that it is discontinued)

I just think the TE sounds totally different from the JE series of Evans amps. If
someone is considering purchasing one based on their familiarity with the rest of the
Evan line, I recommend that they audition it first. At least a couple of other
listeners agree with differences I hear.
It might be a great steel guitar amp. After all, that was Evans original market. A
lot of steel players best buddies play tele, so that might be the target audience.
For the tone I like, I much prefer a JE-150, JE-200 or Webb 6-14 GP. Maybe you've
found settings that I didn't find or your equipment combination is more synergistic
with the TE than mine. You obviously have good ears, so this is just one of those
differences in taste things. Two rational and thoughtful people can have differing
opinions about the same thing.
Best regards,
Dave
The AE100 was co-designed w/ Ron Eschete and is the newest model in the
Evans line. Just introduced in May 99, they have not been discontinued.
The 100W AE100 w/ 8'' speaker is the most compact console amplifier that
Evans has ever built - just 25lbs, 14 3/4''w, 7 1/2''d, 14 1/2h. Same
controls and jacks as the JE & TE series.
