I decided to put up a solo guitar rendition of Everything Happens. I'm new
to this Youtube thing so any advice or criticism is welcomed:

I like it! Your tone is so... liquid and smooth.

Nice stuff, Chas. There's so much to be said for thumb tone. My only
critique, apart from the lack of go-go dancers, is that I like to see
the right hand, so a different camera placement perhaps. Or play
standing on your head. I dunno. :-)

nice stuff for sure. if you're looking for pointers, i'd say set the camera
right in front of you, and not off and up to the side.

very nice Charlie,
Great relaxed style with nice swing. I like the bass movment in
your chords and that Joe Pass style of trading improv with chords.
Sounded great.

Nice flow, Charlie. It's hard to get a relaxed swinging flow when
playing solo. The camera angle is weird - are you afraid we'll steal
your grips? :-)

I love the tone on your guitar and you make that old number really cool
again. The solo work is really great, I love the way you play a few chords
from the melody then drop in a line or two, then a few chord phrases. I
actually like the camera angle for a change but I would like to see your
left hand better.

Thanks Greg, most of that is because of the JazzKat amp that I'm playing
through and the 175. Some guys have been complaining that they can't get the
darker sounds out of the newer 175's or the JazzKat for that matter but I
haven't had that problem. The strings have been on there for almost a year
now so that could have something to do with it also.

use the direct out on my amp but instead have to rely on the cameras mic

I am looking into a usb interface to record to computer, as every
place I talk to about gigs ask for either a demo or a Myspace site. I
haven't recorded anything since I was in a rock band in the early
90's. We went to a real studio and put out a couple of cassettes.

I think I will start with that. I am not up to the standard of you,
Dick, Dan, Eric, et al who post vid clips yet. Maybe in another 5
years. Maybe by then the video editing will be good enough for me to
correct all the clams. :-)

Hi Charlie, great video. Something like this really inspires a learner
like me. Effortless playing, great tone, and devoid of anything flashy
for flashy's sake. Really keeps me going and give me something to
aspire to whenever I pick up my guitar (which I think I'm gonna have
to do right now).

Hey Thumbs! Your playing takes on a different character when you play
with your thumb. Softens you up a little bit. Liked the overhead shot.

Just to add a note of dissent, I couldn't care less about watching
someone's right hand. I can see you're using your thumb, that's all I
need to know. I get a nice view of your left. I'm all about the left.

Part of the reason that I took that approach is that I noticed that I've
been playing too hard lately on some things.
I think that of all of the different camera angles I've tried this one is
the best but now I have to figure out how to get the hands more visible.
Thanks for watching.

I don't know Tom, I can remember back years ago when I was a kid pressing my
face up against the TV screen when a jazz guitarist came on trying to see
what his hands were doing so I understand where they are coming from. Any
clue from anywhere seems to help. You must be happy with what your right is
doing. For myself I still like to see them both.
But as just a performance video for the non-player then I suppose it isn't
necessary to see the hands. Then again some guy playing alone in the spare
bedroom is kind of a strange performance video:)
Later,
Charlie

Charlie,

I am going to come at it from a different angle. I would like to have heard
this with a pick. I think it would have given a certain definition to the
sound that the thumb is missing but the downfall is it would be missing the
flow that the thumb provides. I am always torn between using the thumb and a
pick. Not a criticism but just a comparison.

No matter what the playing is great and I still think your gift as a comping
guitarist has few equals. I wish BIAB would develop a Charles Robinson real
time comp style and I would be the first buyer.

Thanks a lot for the compliment Mark. I've been torn between playing with my
thumb and using a pick for almost as long as I've been playing. Each has
it's own strong points. Some other guitarists switch back and forth, most
notably George Benson who you can see going from one to the other on some of
the You Tube videos. I finally decided that you can do both much as a
trumpet player might use a mute at some times but not at others. You are
right in that it is hard to decide which would be best for a particular
interpretation of a tune,
