This was the first guitar show I've ever been at, and it was
overwhelming to see all those beautiful guitars and amazing players
milling around.

I sent on saturday, and the highlights for me were:

1. Trying out Comins, Buscarino, Mortoro and a few other great
archtops. I think Comins Parlor was my favorite.

2. Jamming with Ron Affif! What a treat. Then Barry Green took over
jamming with him... Also, saw Gene Bertonici jam with Jerry Hahn.

3. Meeting Steve Howe. YES!

4. At the Jazzbar: I saw great sets by Rick Stone, Mundell Lowe, Randy
Johnston, Jack Wilkins (solo!) and Jerry Hahn (remember his old GP
articles?)

5. At the Benedetto booth: Steve Herberman and I stood right in front
of Jimmy Bruno jamming with John Pisano on acoustics. Wow! Joe Ragusa
reported that I missed a jam of Jimmy with Jack Wilkins. Arghh!

6. Met a few RMMGJ'ers: Joe Ragusa and Steve Herberman (also I think
it was Keith Murch?). Steve and I had a great jam but everything
around was so loud we could hardly hear ourselves. Steve is a
fantastic player! I have that one recorded, so maybe I'll look for a
highlight to post.

Dan,
i'd love to hear some of the jam with Steve- he's an amazing guitarist- I'm
lucky to get to study with him.

Dan,
I had no idea you taped that! You might have to search hard to find anything
worthy to post, though you sounded great(definitely not the tune where
somebody started trying to play a bass along with us... ugh) Funny thing
because the same thing happened to me during what was a highlight of the
show for me: Playing 2 tunes with Mark Elf at the DeCava booth. I got into a
nice conversation with an elderly woman who turned out to be Mark Elf's mom!
I was trying out a seven string playing "Tenderly" very quietly when I heard
a gravelly voice say keep going, keep going. It was Mark Elf with his one of
a kind moustache and beret. He said "let's play some more" and we went into
a fast rhythm changes. Halfway through the 2nd A section a mysterious
bassline appeared from who knows where, louder than both of us. Usually you
can't find a bass player but twice a bassist popped up out of nowhere and
nearly caused a trainwreck. All that aside I'm not sure who's playing I
enjoyed more Mark's or Dan's! And I feel like I know Dan so well from
reading his great posts here. Great player and great guy.

I was very impressed by the playing of Barry Greene and Rodney Jones in
addition to so many others. Also Mimi Fox who at times reminded me a bit of
Bruce Forman (maybe a Cal. thing). I talked to Chris Buzzelli for a little
while before I left Sun. late afternoon and he told me that he saw Clay
Moore at the show. I'd be interested to hear of any of Clay's experiences
there.

And to my student Jaime, an upcoming 7 string jazz player who has come out
to post lately, make sure you're at the show next year!

I'm sure I left a few things out so I'll post them later...

Oh yes a couple of quick things:
That was Keith Murch at the show (RMMGJ poster). What a warm human being and
I bet he plays the guitar with the same attitude. He came down from Canada
with his brother Glen Murch who owns Murch Music. Had some great
conversations with Keith but never did get to play together, there's always
next year!

It was nice to reconnect with one of my former Berklee instructors Charles
Chapman. He played on the last tune of the Benedetto concert Sat. night but
something weird was going on with the Fender Cyber-Twin he was using, like a
strange very "wet" reverb and delay combination. It was a shame because that
is all the space he got on the concert and there was a sound problem. Hope
next year he'll get to play more...

There were so many guys who were accessible like Billy Baeur, Mundell Lowe,
Jimmy Bruno, John Pisano,Vic Juris, Rodney Jones etc. etc. You could go up
and talk to any of them. I'm still coming down from it all... I'd like to
read about what some of you other guys did out there at show.

My show report is under the heading "classic american guitar show"
which got tacked on to the old thread of that name from previous
years. I should have said "Classic show 2002" or something like that.
Anyone got answers to my questions there?

Thought I'd move my report over to this thread, where it belonged:

"Another May, another Classic American Guitar Show. I'm really lucky
to live 5 minutes from this show. I got a great deal on four sets of
Thomastik Swing 12's, the new Barry Galbraith solos collection from
Mel Bay, and other goodies as well. I saw Rick Stone, Mundell Lowe
and Randy Johnston play at the Jazz Bar. Missed Jerry Hahn (had to
take my kids home--then came back by myself). Spoke to Dan Adler.
Who else was there that I should have introduced myself to?

I also introduced myself to Jimmy Bruno at the Benedetto booth. He
was very friendly and nice. I sat two feet away as he and Jack
Wilkins played a few great duets. I didn't ask them if they were
thinking vertically or horizontally. Easily worth the admission.

And the rows and rows of beautiful archtop guitars, all ridiculously
expensive! Are there enough jazz guitarists out there to support all
these luthiers? Let alone jazz guitarists with enough money to be
able to buy these instruments? Maybe the government should begin a
program of compulsory Jazz Guitar training for rich people to help
support these craftspeople. Linda Manzer was very nice, by the way.

Did anyone catch Jerry Hahn. What was he playing like? I have his
albums, except for the most recent one, but I wish I could have seen
him. I absorbed his GP columns in the seventies and eighties."

GREAT SHOW!!!..but once again...they are running out of room. I met Steve
Howe and he was really a JERK! He would not allow me to take a picture of
him. He should have done the VIP tour if he didnt want people walking up
to him.
I would like to hook up the guys who were taking videos. I recorded much
on a dat but would like some video if you are out there contact me!
It was great to see chapman. I was also his student back in the 70s. I
bought his cd and was very surprised at how well he is playing! Its a
great CD...he does a lot of solo work and picked some great tunes.

Joe,

I saw part of Jerry's jazzbar set and one song he did with Gene
Bertocini. It was basically straight ahead with a few twists here and
there. Very bright sound. He is endorsing the new D'Angelicos. After
reading all his articles in the 80's about comping and basslines, I
sort of expected the earth to move, but his comping behind Gene was
just plain ok.

The one that killed me was Mundell Lowe. I think you caught part of
that set. He was just so smooth (in the positive meaning of the word
if there still is one). Everything just flowed out of him. All his
chords and arrangements and lines sounded so natural, authentic and
swinging.

Yeah, Mundell was really on. I've seen video from the fifties of him
and he plays better now! He really had a nice rich sound and good
chordal work and lines. A real top-flight jazz guitarist.

Now if we can only get Billy Bean out of retirement. Apparently Stan
Getz hurt Billy's feelings or something with some putdown and he just
stopped playing in public. Just listen to those duets with John
Pisano. Nobody could play as well as Billy Bean back then, not even
Tal, IMHO.

Mundell is a very hip musician. I used to try to catch him
every chance I got back in LA. Trivia factoid: Mundell scored
the Woody Allen film "Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex".
He's also married to Andre Previn's first wife. Andre's third wife
was Mia Farrow, with whom Andre adopted a little Korean baby. So
Mundell is semi-related to Woody that way too, I suppose...

Did anyone catch Jimmy B's two master classes? Sadly I didn't know about
them in advance and missed them both days (argh!). Anything to report? (I
did see the Benedetto Players concert Sat night. Jimmy played/sounded
great; otherwise, I was underwhelmed a bit. I thought the Buscarino show
was much better, somewhat due to the small room and intimate atmosphere for
Ron Affif, Barry Greene and Gene Bertoncini). The Benedetto thing is,
sadly, starting to sound like one big factory commercial - I'm disappointed
for Bob. My two cents.

I agree wholeheartedly!!!
Bean was one of the greatest single line jazz guitarists EVER. His
TIME, TONE, TECHNIQUE,MELODIC INVENTION easily smoke most players
40yrs later!!!
Pat Martino owes him an ENORMOUS debt. I believe Bean to be the
greatest single line jazz guitarist of the 50's/60's--bar none. Listen
to Bean with Pisano, especially the relatively recent record: "Makin'
it Again"
This jam session style record features Bean in BLOWING mode. By
blowing I mean:
blowing every other bebop guitarist of his time out of the water!!!

After discussing with Steve, here are a couple of tracks from the jam.

Some disclaimers: it was so noisy we didn't hear each other, the
guitars had heavy broze round wound strings (so Steve couldn't play
fingerstyle and you can hear lots of creaking when we comp), the sound
was awful, you can hear some guy discussing the finish on the guitar
with the salesman while the salesman was fussing with Steve's amp
settings during his solo, a country bass player decided to sit in with
us, a rock guitarist started wailing at the end. Still, Steve sounds
so good that it's worth listening.

On Oleo:

I ended up with the first solo and Steve went second.

On Out Of Nowhere:

Steve took the head and I took the first solo:

OTOH if you challenge Keith Richard for the ultimate desiccated look,
would you want it confirmed in a photograph? BTW KR says mobile phones

sometimes endorsement deals can prohibit photos.... for instance... I can't
be photographed holding a guitar other than a Benedetto or Guild benedetto

want a picture of it. Most times I let them do it with the understanding

Hi Steve,

I was there both days. I definitely want to go back, and next year any
and all RMMGJ'ers *must* wear name tags or something to that effect. I
would have loved to have met all of you and spent some time playing
and hanging out. I did meet several folks I've only ever talked to via
e-mail - Rick Stone, Chris Buzzelli, Joe Giglio (we also have two
musician friends in common), Alistair MacRae Birch, and Diane Hubka.
BTW, Diane has a new record out that features Paul Bollenback, Bucky
Pizzarelli, John Hart, Gene Bertoncini, Jack Wilkins, and several
others whose names escape me at the moment. Can't beat that lineup for
starters! Diane was also kind enough to let me tag along with her and
buddy Phyllis, as I was without wheels and needed a ride to the
Benedetto/Guild show. We ended up all hanging out after the concert at
the Hilton - too many people there to recount all of them. Jimmy
Bruno, BTW, was the party coordinator and head party animal. Thanks
for the hang, Jimmy!

I heard many of the players at the Jazz Bar, and I don't think I heard
a bad one in the bunch. I did miss Rodney Jones, as I was jamming a
bit w/ Mimi Fox in the Guild room, and I left a bit too early to hear
Frank Vignola - two players I'm really sorry to have missed. Two
pleasant surprises for me were Barry Greene and Ben Sher. I'd seen
Barry's picture in JJG mag, but without knowing anything about him I
didn't want to take a chance on buying a record. (you know how it is)
He plays really, really well, and is a super nice guy. He knew my name
from the NG and said he'd been to my site to hear my clips. Ben Sher
played nylon string, doing mostly Brazilian type stuff. Ben and I knew
each other slightly from time spent in Pittsburgh in the early 1980's,
and he plays great! I enjoyed his set a lot.

As far as gear and all that, I have a hard time concentrating on such
things when there is so much music to be heard. I wanted to hear and
meet the people playing, and did do a lot of that. I think next time I
have to make a point of checking out more guitars and other gear. Mimi
and I were lamenting the fact that Heritage - with whom we both have
endorsement deals - were not at the show, and don't seem to be
interested these days in promoting their products or doing anything to
help their endorser's careers. :-(

As a side note, my drummer friend Brannen Temple (from Texas) was in
NYC to play a gig w/ Leni Stern at the 55 Bar on Sunday, and I went
with him to the rehearsal and gig. Leni is just the coolest person;
she gave me a guitar at the rehearsal and had me sit in on two tunes
at the gig. Along with Adam Levy on guitar (whom I'd met a few years
ago in Mexico - small world) she had an oud player and a belly dancer.
She was celebrating a birthday and had food, champagne, and cake.
Husband Mike showed up, fresh off the plane from Europe. It was a heck
of a lot of fun. I wished I could have stayed a few more days to catch
some more of the action in the Big Apple. Next year, though!

Hey Jimmy.

Thanks for the response. I'll look for the tapes - sorry I missed you.
Next year I've got to get the schedule in advance (maybe we'll get one and
post it here and plan a few more meetings in advance, do the name tag thing
for all the anonymous posters, etc.).

I'm typically not a whiner about shows - it was great that you, Jack and the
others were able to do it. I've been an infrequent but regular communicator
with Bob and Cindy B. since his 'Cremona' model went for about $2500 (and
John Buscarino was still apprenticing), and I have the greatest respect for
him. I've just gotten the sense that the Guild deal has quickly
commercialized his fabulous personal franchise. Maybe its just nostalgia on
my part. (Full disclosure - I own two Buscarinos).

Anyway - as always I enjoyed seeing/hearing you and the 'roundest tone in
the room'. It was a great treat, and my wife came out for your show and
finally has an appreciation for what I run on about.

Thanks for your in- depth post as it was an interesting read. I stayed at
the Rodeway and unfortunately missed the Hilton party sounds like a great
time.

Out of all the players that I heard last weekend Rodney was the most
"modern" to my ears. His opening tune at the jazz bar was filled with
outside playing and tricky intervallic things that were pretty mind blowing
and of course, great chops. It was a nice contrast to the more mainstream
styles which were in abundance at the jazz bar.

I feel the same way I didn't check out too much gear either. I'm surprised
Heritage wasn't there too. You should have played on the show endorsing
their guitar...

Sounds like you had a great time indeed! I agree that we should wear some
kind of name tag next time.

A couple of nice aquisitions at the show were a couple of great CD's from
guys I met at the show for the first time. One from Ned Boynton and also
from Dan Adler. Dan's CD is a duo with a really nice vocalist named Daniella
recorded at Rick Stone's studio. Great recorded sound and very nice backing
Dan! Thanks for the CD. I've got to give Ned's CD a better listen, has
anybody heard it? Keith Murch turned me onto the new Joe Pass DVD (Mel Bay)
that has tons of great stuff on it. It is a combination of the Genius of JP
video, the Brecon concert, plus additional tunes. Only problem is I don't
have a DVD player yet but I figure this DVD will force me to buy one!

Last thing: Did anyone attend Mundell Lowe's 80th birthday party in Brooklyn
last Sat. night? It was at a restaurant and open to the public but I missed
it. I'd love to hear about it.

I just found this newsgroup and was delighted to see that you post
here. The first time I saw you was at *last year's* tcg show in LI. I
stood right in front of you at Dale Unger's, American Archtop booth
while you played a few tunes with Walt Bibinger. I was mesmerized.
Both of the guys I drove to the show with ended up getting one of your
instructional videos. As a result, my guitar-focus has been diverted
from my blues/rock background to investigating jazz much more
seriously. I am amazed at what I've missed.

And after reading the posts here, I am absolutely ticked that I had to
work like a crazyman the past few weeks and missed this year's show!

Anyway, I saw you again, a few months back, at the Somerset Vo-Tech in
Bridgewater, NJ with Howard and Frank. I was blown away!

I brought my camera to the Vo-Tech show and got some good shots of you
all (they are on my website, if any are interested the URL is:
http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/discus/ Look in the "Miscellaneous"
section under "Jimmy Bruno, Howard Alden & Frank Vignola in Concert")

I saw you come out into the audience during the intermission. You
looked busy with friends, so I didn't bug you. But I really wanted to

autographs and pictures? What's cool and what's not?

Are you playing anywhere near Central Jersey?

I know what you mean, but overall I think it's probably a good thing. The
post-Benedetto Artist Award I played was, to me at least, a much improved
instrument. And anything that raises the profile of jazz guitars in general is
a plus. The alternative would be for Benedetto to retire with no way to pass
on the legacy, a small handful of guitars become $50,000 unobtainables like
D'Aquistos, and only a very few people ever get to own or play one. I like the
idea that there will be more good jazz guitars out there.

I agree with you about the guitars. Bob is extremely conscientious about
letting guitars with his name on it go out the door before he sees them. I
have both type Benedettos, one made by bob and another made by the two
people he trained at the Guild custom shop. I can't tell the difference.
I hope I'm not letting the cat out of the bag too soon but Guild plans to
release a Jimmy Bruno model that will be around or under $3000.00

Hey Mr. B... !!!

During the LI show... I attended your Sunday session "Comping 101"... very
nicely done..!!!!

I enjoyed it alot... and as an 'older' rock and roller, learning some jazz
chops..
I learned plenty... I'm hoping (as did that lady) that you might release
the tapes of
that 'class' as a video... it was a very good 'foundation' for comping...
and playing
in general... you might title it "accompaniment 101".... and add some of
your 'basics
for jazz guitar...

So many musicians, dare I say "soloists"... don't seem to want to make an
effort
to 'learn' how to 'back up others' when they solo... it seems to be a 'lost
art' these days...
I live in the rock/blues/R&B world mostly and this problem is even more
evident there...

I don't know if you made a 'concious' effert to do so... but, it was VERY
enlightening to
see you actually USE the stuff you taught, in your 'set' at the JAZZ BAR...
one minute you
were making a point about how you approach comping... 30 minutes later
you're comping for
Frank Vignola and using all the examples you showed us earlier....
Whew...!!!

A very nice lesson indeed...!!!

Thanks again....

Right now.. here is how it stands but this can and probably will change many
times
it will be a laminated guitar
scale=25
One pick up designed by Bob and made by seymour duncan
16 inch
body depth lightly smaller than the typical archtop. I can get excact
measurements from Bob

I will talk to uild about it... I'm sure they will comply. LOL I don't
know how much the list will be. I would like it to be around $2500. that
means you may be able to get it from a dealer for less

glad you liked the clinic. and it's great that you noticed the comping at
the jazz set. I didn't do that on purpose... it's just how I have been
comping for the last 25 years. The release of those videos is a long way
off. There are many legal and contractual obligations to deal with. Glad it
made sense because I never did a clinic on comping before

Jimmy;

I notice you say the guitar is laminated. In general do you prefer laminated
tops for live playing? (or do you just think of them as apples and oranges that
both have their advantages and disadvantages?) The reason I'm curious is that
I've always been under the impression that you were a pretty die hard carved
top/floating pickup type player.

I can't believe I missed this thing this year. I didn't want to go in
previous years, but I wanted to check out a Borys this time.
I was supposed to go with an old friend of mine who said he'd call
me about it. He called me, but he didn't say a word about the show! He
just played his guitar over the phone, which I couldn't even hear
because he lives so far away!
Never trust a man who has smoked pot probably every day of his life
since he was a teenager.
BTW, did anyone get to play a Borys? What did you think of it?

Hi Tom. actually for live playing I prefer a carved top with built in
pick-up. But I have discovered that once you use an amp, after a certain
volume level... it doesn't matter whether it is carved or laminated. But I
am the worst guy in the world to ask about gear. If the guitar plays well
and feels good and the intonation is perfect, I will like it

Joe,

I listened again to the Hal Gaylor/Walter Norris trio CD and I see
what you mean about Billy Bean. For some reason I never paid much
attention to him, but, you are right, his phrasing is the most
authentic bebop phrasing I've heared from anyone on guitar - and he
can do it at any speed. From the excerpts on Amazon it sounds like his
duet album with Pisano is even better:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000ILTU/102-3428757-8321754

The 'Strike Up the Band' excerpt is amazing. Are there other albums?

Congrats, Jimmy, you deserve this recognition! btw, since a comment of mine
started this (and for the record) - I have a Guild-period Benedetto Benny 6,
and it's one of the best feeling, most even, balanced, well intonated
guitars I've ever owned. It's the first guitar I grab most of the time
now - with its 13-56 flat wounds its got such a great 'vibe'.

P.S. - I've been finding entire threads several days after they're posted
lately (including almost every other message on this thread) - usually after
they're too old to appear on the server any longer. Anyone having this
trouble just recently?

The Guild JB model will be available at this discount only in
International Orange with purple binding, azure hardware, and a green
headstock overlay, and will be signed in green Magic Marker by Vice
President Cheney.

(that's a joke.)

My wife says I can buy any guitar I want as long as it's green.

As far as I know, there were two trio albums with Norris and Gaynor
and four records with Bean and Pisano. I saw one of the Makin' It LPs
going for $100 at the jazz record center in NYC.
Another of the Bean/Pisano CDs has Dennis Budimir, another underrated
jazz guitarist sitting in also.
In addition, Bean did some good stuff with Charlie Ventura on a few
records.
Don't bother with the Herbie Mann stuff Bean did in the 60s, though.

That's true... Billy Bean sure was some kind of guitar player.
But then so is John Pisano...just give those duet CDs another listen!
