bought an ipod!

I posted a couple of weeks ago asking about ipods. I broke down and
bought one, and have been completely happy with it. I'm using windows
2000 and ephpod, and have had no problems with it.

I bought the 30GB model, which holds about twice my entire cd
collection! I must say this is a great investment for anyone who
spends a lot of time commuting on public transportation, or running,
both of which I do a lot of.

Be careful with your ipod when running, Apple no longer has running as a
recommended activity when using it. The Hard Drive is very small and is
fragile, especially with the bigger models. I have my last gen Ipod 10GB and
its great!!

Has anyone purchased a Creative Nomad Zen? These play WMA files in addition
to MP3, and they come in 20- and 60GB USB2.0 models. For firewire fans,
there's a 20GB 1394 model. Since much of my collection is in WMA format,
I'm waiting for the price on these to drop a bit. :-)

Check out the archos products. I wouldn't buy anything from creative. Their
software is horrible. If you want to use the thing for data, it does not
support a win32 file system and puts everything in one directory. The archos
products look like a removable drive to any windows system and they also
have a model that does mp3 recording for a line/in...I've often thought
about picking one up to do live recordings...

Yeah, I know the Creative software stinks. But there's some inexpensive
third-party software called "Notmad Explorer" that's supposed to be
wonderful. http://www.redchairsoftware.com/

Your point about putting everything in one directory is a good one. I
figured I'd get the 60GB, so I'd want to use it as a portable hard disk. So
much for that one. :-( It's been a while since I've looked at the Archos,
so I don't know what's new. Will check it out.

Their latest multi-media 'product' looks very tempting, with the 3
megapixel camera attachment and large-ish TV-type screen.

Why is that funny? The platters are so close together(under a micron), If
jarred they will crash into each other. Check the apple support site and ppl
have problems with ipods and running. im just saying he should be careful.

I've been looking at both the Creative Labs and the Archos. Sofware aside,
the big difference seems to be that the Creative Labs unit will record and
play wav files; Archos won't.

I haven't decided if this is a deal breaker for me or not yet, but if
there's better software available for the Creative Labs unit, that may tip
the balance.

Apparently Notmad Explorer does file management too, and not just for audio
files. Maybe there's hope for this device yet. :-)
