In light of the other thread on Benson picking and muting and all, I
was looking at how he holds his pick and whether he uses any
techniques for muting. He notes are amazingly clear, what a sound, and
no extraneous noise that I heard. It looks like the heel of his hand
rests on the strings just enough to mute, but something else caught my
eye; does holding the pick the way he does and the way it aligns his
hand along the strings restrict the ability to pick in different
places between the bridge and fingerboard? It looks like the entire
time, he picks in pretty much the same spot on the neck, and I do not
know if that is deliberate or some restriction. There is that Bireli
thread that Joe posted just below here where he plays a solo piece and
picks all up and down the range.

Eeeee-eh-xcellent. Just what I needed to brighten (so to speak) my

What do you call that style of picking - it looks like he is doing
mostly
downstrokes which seems impossible at that speed?

Yeah, that's interesting. Kind of looks like a gentler version of
what the Gypsy guitarists like Stochelo do. His right hand has a kind
of bouncing, rhythmic motion that is very reminiscent of Stochelo, and
yes, it looks like mostly downstrokes. Cool.
