Dan, I have not had much luck using modeling devices (Digitech RP's) with
older Fender tube amps. The Fender amp adds so much of its own color to the
sound that it seems to really alter the models.

I've actually had the best luck with fairly transparent, solid state amps (I
like Yamahas).

I have a good friend who is actually a drummer who plays guitar as his second
instrument. This guy really is on his way to becoming a great pop/rock/r&b
guitarist, btw. He uses a Boss GT-3 plugged straight into a Fender tube amp (I
think it's a Blues Deville) and says he's really happy with the results. I
haven't heard him play through the rig, and was a bit skeptical at first, but
he recently played with a Nashville hotshot session guy who used almost the
exact same rig (except I think with the GT-6), so it's working for some
players.

I use a Fender Deluxe Reverb RI - no effects loop. I front-end the amp
with a Digitech GNX3 pedal that models not only amps, speaker
cabinets, but stompboxes as well in addition to having all sorts of
effects and an 8 track digital recorder. I use this rig live and it
works very, very well with enough tonal range that I can play the
organ intro part on Black Magic Woman and still switch back and forth
between clean and OD tones as needed.

By the same token, I sometimes use a Zoom 505-II into that same amp,
but the cleans from that pedal suck compared to the GNX3. Still, for a
lighweight rig, it works well, too.

Danny,

I use a Yamaha DG Stomp (now discontinued) thru my Evans amp. I plug
it in the Effects return spot. If you plug it into the front of the
amp you will have two pre amps, two sets of tone controls and so on,
that is why I plug into the effects return. It sounds ok. It can be a
little noisey on the high gain settings. Yamaha is coming out with a
new effects device called a Magic Stomp that will incorportate the DG,
AG and UD stomp effects in one device. It will not be as tweekable on
the fly but you will be able to tweek to your hearts content on a
computer if you want and then save it to the stomp box via a usb
conection.
I also read something about an amp specifically build for modeling
devices, I think it was called an Atomic amp. Maybe worth looking
into.

I have a friend who used a pod and likes it alot. He does get some
really good sounds out of it.

I like the size of the device and I like having all my effects in an
easy to carry package. It sounds "good" but does not behave like a
tube amp, ie it is hard to get it to feed back like a tube amp will
and so on. It just doesn't breath.

Hope this helps and good luck,

Best,

Jeff
