That was the British Dick. Now, the Bronx is another story. Jonas
Bronck, one of your countrymen owned the whole place way back when. When
city dwellers would venture upstate they'd say "We're going to visit the
Broncks". Which became "The Bronx". Anyway, enough trivia. Time to
watch the Bronx Bombers beat-up on the
NY Mets. (That's baseball.) Cheerio, Rick :)

So we owned the Bronx. And what about Brooklyn (Breukelen) and Harlem
(Haarlem)? Those are Dutch names.
But I'm not sure I want those back. Is the Bronx a decent neighbourhood?

Nobody over here understands the fuzz about American football by the way.
And baseball for that matter. I guess you guys don't like soccer?

Hi Dick. Soccer is catching on little by little here. Among suburban
white kids
and among the many South Americans that live here. Not much scoring in
that game though. I think that they should give both teams one point
each and then just play the last 4 minutes. The Bronx is one of the 5
boroughs that make up NYC. It's a city with 1.6 million residents. From
what the older folks say it was a beautiful place during the 1920's to
the 1950s'. Now, unfortunately much of it is comprised of poor and/or
working poor neighborhoods. It's a big place, not just a neighborhood.
There are still low crime areas like Riverdale, City Island, Throggs
Neck (Is Throgg a Dutch name?) Morris Park,. Stan Getz, Stanley Kubrick,
Gene Bertoncini..all Bronx guys. Have you ever seen the movie "A Bronx
Tale", with Robert Deniro? Gives a little idea of life during the
1950's-60's in the Fordham/ Arthur Avenue area. In a strange twist that
films exteriors were shot in Queens. Yuk!! I blame that on their
location scout Rick Ross. Cheers, Rick :))

People were still speaking bastardized dialects of Dutch (commonly
called
"Jersey Dutch") in the greater NY area into the 20th century.
Occasional
Dutch words are still found in the vocabularies of some of the more
isolated
rural communities in the region.

One of the more interesting such communities are people who call
themselves
"Ramapough Mountain Indians". They are descended from 17th century
unions
between Dutch colonists and African Americans, and still bear Dutch
surnames. In the late 20th century, some members of this community
decided that they
were of American Indian descent, although all the evidence is against
this
notion. Nonetheless, they organized themselves as a tribe, and the New
Jersey state government plays along and recognizes them as Indians.

So if you go to the Ramapo Mountain area, you can meet people who call
themselves by names such as "Silent Wolf van der Donck", or
"Running Bear de Groot".

The Hudson valley was also settled by the Dutch as far north as Albany. Lots
of towns retain their Dutch names: Valatie, Rensselaer, Claverack,
Stuyvesant, etc. Dutch surnames for both black and white families are also
quite common: Van Alstyne, Van DeCarr, Van Cleef, etc. Lots of descendents
of president Martin Van Buren around too. ....joe

Dutch banks owned most of western NY, too. And almost everything else
at one time or another -- the Vanderbilts, Rothschilds, Rockefellers,
etc: early American proponents of the capitalist ideal.

That sounds like the mysterious group that turns up in the Florida
'Glades in the 19th century and figures in Peter Mathiessen's "Killing
Mr. Watson" trilogy.
