I have hardly played this guitar, it's been sitting in it's case for
two months.

This morning I decide to play it, when I pull it out of the case, the
strings are all slack, tuned down about a fourth. What's up with that?
So I start to tune it up and I notice the bridge slipped, it's at this
crazy angle. So I move the bridge to where I think it should be and
tune up. Bing! The tailpiece breaks off at the hinge. WTF??? I hope it
isn't going to be a pain the ass to get them to honor the warranty.

I hope they just let me drive over to the warehouse and get a
replacement.

Dang...

I had the same thing happen to mine. I was shocked that the tailpiece
broke rather than the strings.

It was easy to get a replacement. I called them, sent in the broken
piece and they sent a new one right away.

That's good to hear. I'll call them in the morning.

I hope this happens quick, I've had all sorts of problems with them in
the past. I wasn't even supposed to have this one. It was a double
ship/double charge that they never sent a call tag for return. Yes, I
paid for it, eventually I traded off the first one. I hope the
replacement tail piece doesn't have any problems.

Someday I'll post my whole D'Angelico story. It's sad.

Confirmed. They were very nice. But what a shock it was!

Well, I joined the club a few minutes ago. Took out the EXL to play it through my new amp setup and tailpiece was completely off -- broken clean through at the hinge. Quite a shock! Glad to read that they will provide new one. Will get on phone as soon as I can on Monday! Thank you for posting about this -- eases my mind...

Broken at the hinge? Anyone know what the cause for the break? A bad run of defects maybe?

I had to replace the tailpiece on an old Samick HJ-650 I still own a
while ago too.
Good to know there are still viable replacements out there.

There are a few brands that have had problems with this- D'Angelico and
Ibanez in particular. It's most likely a fatigue failure from being
under tension. There are basically three posibilities: bad design, bad
material and/or bad manufacturing practices (e.g., voids or inclusions
in the metal). Be happy it disn't happen when you were playing it, that
would have been even a bigger shock.

You're comment made me think of the disappointments of opening the gig bag of my Ashbory bass, just to find the silicone "G" had snapped ...again. Find out that a combination of string angle through the nut AND static electricity of the gig bag would break the string at no given notice. Best to take the string out of the nut before parking it in the gag...
