I don't use hotmail but I was having trouble accessing the internet
last night.
Maybe it's them.

Not surprised at all. MS is a huge target right now due to the latest
nasty going around the 'net. Fortunately I got my company patched in
time as well as all of the suggested workarounds and we seem to have
escaped (all fingers crossed).
Maryland's DMV went down yesterday. A local hospital here (G'boro NC)
had 2,000 computers dropped to their knees yesterday.
I've put in 27 hours in the last two days checking, rechecking,
re-rechecking. I'm still not calm but hopeful nonetheless.
I do my best not to allow any of our users to even use Hotmail. It's
a "Hotbed" of spam, virii, hackers, etc. While a great idea (free
web-based email) it is also an inviting target for the miserable
pricks that get off on causing destruction and billions of dollars of
time & energy spent chasing down their worms, trojans, etc.

P.S. If any of you are using Windows and haven't done so already I
highly suggest you get the patch for the latest vulnerability
IMMEDIATELY. Even their (MS's) update site is targeted for an attack
on the 16th.

Hey Kevin, thanks for the link, but it looks like these patches are for newer
windows products. At home, we're still running Windows 98 (first edition,
I think). Does that make us more vulnerable or less to this newest worm
thing?

Hi Bob, I don't know what the deal is, but when I try to logon it goes to
the normal place http://loginnet.passport.com/login wherein absolutely nothing
happens- just a blank white screen and a little message in the lower left
hand corner that says "done" %$#$%^&*

Indeed.

Or spam that only affects virus writers....

Just from various security organizations' emails warning of it.
Apparently they've found enough in the worm itself to publicize this
information.
The following from Symantec:
If the current month is after August, or if the current date is after
the 15th, the worm will perform a DoS on Windows Update. The worm will
activate the DoS attack on the 16th of this month, and continue until
the end of the year.

And from CERT:
Lab testing has confirmed that the worm includes the ability to
launch a TCP SYN flood denial-of-service attack against
windowsupdate.com. We are investigating the conditions under which
this attack might manifest itself. Unusual or unexpected traffic to
windowsupdate.com may indicate an infection on your network, so you
may wish to monitor network traffic.

To kill the virus I just disconnected from the net, restarted my computer,
and ran all my virus checkers to isolate the bug and kill it. Once I did
that, and plugged myself back into the net, I was fine. So I'd suggest
checking your computer for viral activity.
Of course it could also be the product of a normal computer malfunction on
either your machine's, or microsofts' account. This is probably more likely
if the hotmail thing is the only bug you are experiencing.

THANKS,,,,,anway, NOW it's working again. Mysterioso/
Yep... the nasty MSBLASTER worm only effects Win2000 and XP for now. Us 98ers
are safe.
I got the fix at work today, for my daughters computer. Along with tons of
complaints from our offices state wide about the worm hit. Nasty little
"bug"ger......
