A dear guitarist friend of mine who lives in Taupo New Zealand is doing it
tough, courageously battling pancreatic and secondary liver cancer, possibly
with months to live. He is a great fan of Johnny Smith's, and still relates
a late '70's meeting with the great man, who kindly went out of his way to
arrange a personal meeting, while holidaying there.
He is systematically listening with renewed awe to his extensive
collection of Johnny Smith's recordings, and it would mean so much to him to
receive a final greeting from the legend in these difficult times.
I know Johnny Smith is around 80 himself, but does anyone know if there is a
way to contact him with this compassionate request for one of his greatest
fans.
Any information gratefully received...
I can be contacted at this email address up until May 30th...
Regards...Ross Martin..

Ross,

I forwarded the message to Johnny. He will probably respond.

Hey Ross-
Good to hear from you again! I can't thank you enough for the Terry
Smith tape!
There's a guy named Rick Ireland in this NG who's a wonderful guy
and a close friend of Johnny Smith. I don't have his Email address
anymore, but I'm sure someone here can put you in touch with him. I'm
sure JS will oblige- he's a humble guy and will probably be
incredulous about the whole thing.

Many thanks for the replies...seems this is still the greatest ng around...
And greetings to the Schism..the sharing the Terry Smith tape(how esoteric
is that?) and your feedback again gives me renewed pleasure...
BTW,speaking of arcana, I came across a site with the cv of some teacher
in Noo Joizey who cited Harry Leahey and Roland Prince as his mentors...
someone once requested from me a copy of HL's Still Waters album, but
didn't follow it up. Fine Canadian guitarist Reg Schwager once sent me a
tape that had Roland Prince playing Alone Again..and Rene Thomas doing
Angel Eyes on it...excellent players not mentioned much these days..

Yeah, I used to have a Roland Prince album, and I enjoyed his playing
a lot. He was with Elvin Jones for a while, I think.
