I'm sure somebody here knows the answer to this. There was some
mention of "Dick Garcia" on the HankGarland.com web site as being a
recording "nom de plume". There seem to be several records on which
"Dick Garcia" plays in the late fifties, and having heard a sample
tonight, it sure does sound like Hank! Anyone have any insights on
this?

Thanks.

Dick Garcia was a very talented guitarist from New York City (Astoria) that
played with George Shearing in 1952-53 (took Chuck Wayne's place). Went in the
army in 1953 and was stationed in Alaska. After the Army toured with the Glenn
Miller Orchestra (Ray Mckinley) until 1957. Played jazz clubs in New York and
commercial recordings into the early 1960s and then seemed to drop out of the
music business. Best album was "Message from Garcia". Also recorded a few sides
with Shearing.

In my opinion, he was one of the best jazz guitarists of that era. It's a shame
he didn't record more.

The url is http://www.hankgarland.com

It's a pretty messed up web site, but they make the claim that Hank
used the Dick Garcia moniker due to contractual obligations. I haven't
seen any recordings by Dick Garcia after 1961, when Hank had his
accident. Again, I gotta say that they sure do sound alike.

I don't think they sound very similar-Garland used longer lines and a stronger
sound when he played jazz.

I think it is ridiculous that the Hank Garland website (presumably run by his
brother) attempts to perpetuate this fantasy. Hank Garland's repuation as an
amazing jazz guitarist does not need to be embellished by diminishing the
reputation of another great player, Dick Garcia. While there may be some
similarity in their playing (likely due to similar influences such as Farlow and
Raney), it is not difficult to tell them apart.

There's also a great album Garcia did with Tony Scott- no pianist. One side
features Mundell Lowe (pretty poor outing) and the other side features Dick
Garcia.
He also recorded a record with Joe Puma that was reissued as "Fourmost
Guitars" featuring a compilation of Raney,Wayne and the Puma and Garcia cuts.
An old keyboard player I used to work with played with Garcia when he was in
Alaska. He thought Garcia was great. A guitarist who was on the scene back
then,Bob Grillo, told me Garcia had gambling problems which forced him to
split the scene.

I think this is a great topic and I would like to find Dick
Garcia. He is not listed as having a driving license, a
registration of any kind, a current address or having served in
the United States Army....Even if someone claims he is
alive...then where is he? I would like to know. I think Billy
Garland, Hank's brother has done an honorable job as he cares for
Hank whom has brain damage and their 89 year old mom...people
that really know the family say nothing but wonderful things
about Hank, Billy & their mom. I know that they live a Chrisitan
life and Hank is a wonderful man, blessed man, with many
friends..that he calls his wealth....I know that there will be a
answer to this soon.

If you are saying Dick Garcia didn't exist you are wrong. But he did seem to
drop out about 1965. He was with George Shearing in 1952 and 53 and recorded
with him. He took Chuck Wayne's place with Shearing. He was drafted in 1953,
basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey and was stationed in Alaska. After the
army he toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra (Ray McKinley) until 1957. From
1957 to the middle 60s he worked clubs, and recording. He was extremely
talented but not easy to get to know. One of the best jazz players of that
time.

I think that Hank's brother Billy has done a wonderful job as he
takes care of Hank whom has brain damage and their 89 year old
mom. This question came to us by musican's that knew Hank and
played with Hank. After much research no one could find where
Garcia had ever been the army, a registration of any kind, an
address or anything. Over-dubbed music can meake anyone believe
anything. Hank's wealth will always be his friends, Amy Garland

Well, if you're searching for Dick Garcia, you probably won't find
much. Have you tried Richard, maybe Ricardo, or perhaps Richard is
his middle name, not his first. I guarantee the Army has him listed
under his full first name & middle name. Dick, Rich, Richey, Rick,
Ricky, etc won't find you anything.

yes, Richard Joseph "Dick" Garcia....his social # comes up with
nothing,,back then when Hank was hanging around with Chuck Wayne
he had to have a Union card to get into clubs around NY, Hank
kept records of what he did everyday and who he was with..Hank
was under heavy contracts with record labels and hank also has
his own recordings from the 50's that is the same music on
Foremost Guitars and etc....even Federal Investigators can't find
Garcia....what is up? We do know where the monies for Garcia
have gone. We would like to talk with Garcia if we can. There
is mention of Hank's wife knowing Garcia very well,,perhaps well
enough to use his union card...we would only like to get closure
on this somehow..Amy

sorry. I meant Fourmost Guitars. Hank has had a copy of everyone
of these albums and plenty of his own photo's etc. Hank had alot
of contact with Chuck wayne. Hank , Chuck and George Shearing
played in a night club in NY while Hank was in NY with Eddy
Arnold,,Hank's letter's to his wife and also Hank's notes say so.
Hank even kept record of what he ate for the day and where he
was all day and who he was with. Maybe not the sme guy but maybe
the same Union Card was used other wise Hank could have had a
hard time getting into these clubs mentioned in his log books,
letters and etc. Maybe this caused some friction somethere with
the record companies.. Hank has some nice photo's of Chuck
Wayne, himself, Don Gibson, Johnny Smith and lots more. Hank
loved a jazz gigg and found one where ever he was staying at the
time..He played around Chicago too and lots around
Nashville..If you know anything about Garcia, do let us know.Amy

Hi Ralph,

Then what happened to him? He seems to have disappeared. In
Summerfield's book "The Jazz Guitar, it's Players and Personalities" he
mentions that Garcia is still active on the NY studio scene, something
that I find unlikely.

The Summerfield book was written in the 70s and I think Dick had quit playing
by then.

I left New York in 1969 and I hadn't seen him for about two years.

He used to be interested in Eastern religion and talked about going to India. I
often wondered if that is what happened, but I don't really know. Just have
wondered.

He was at my apartment in Queens more than once. Why are people trying to say
he didn't exist. I can give you a list of (living) guitarists that knew him.
Bucky, Joe Beck, Howard Collins, Jim Hall, Wayne Wright, Mundel Lowe among
others.

The other guitarist that disappeared was Billy Bean. He was in New York in the
about 1967 but was a little screwed up then. Two great jazz players.

Oh, I don't doubt you at all, I was just hoping that you'd be able to
shed some light on what happened to him. The Summerfield book get's
updated every couple of years, but I don't think that he tries to
update more than just new players. Too bad, I think there are a lot of
people who are interested in learning more about Dick!

I know that String Jazz in the UK http://www.musicweb-uk.com has
reissued a coiple of the John Pisano/Billy Bean recordings that have
gotten excellenet reviews.

Cheers,

Ted

I have that and it is very good. Also probably the most overlooked jazz
guitarist is Dennis Budimer. He opted for the Hollywood studios but what a
great player he was (is).

Sorry about the web site but Hank has been in really bad health
and is not getting any better. We have had the web site on hold
for a long time due to our dedication to Hank in his last days.

I feel like I'm talking about Thomas Pynchon or something but the last Dick
Garcia "sighting" that I've heard of was by Joe Puma when I caught him at
Gregory's back in the mid 80s. I figured Garcia was dead so I said to Puma that
it was a shame that he died before he got more recognition for his playing.
Puma said "Yeah, he may as well be dead- he was in here last nite
(Gregory's) leaning against the juke box, looking like a ghost. Some people are
probably dead but they just don't know it".
