Pre Amp Suggestions for SS Amp

Hi Folks:

With all due respect, I know that thhis post is better placed at
Alt.guit.amps, however there are lots of technical folks there, and this
kind of question usually gets responses as to why I shouldn't own an SS
amp.

Anyone have experience with Pre Amp for SS Amp i.e. Polytone, Evans,
etc? My interest is in softening the sound of my amp and to be able to
add... well here goes, Tube-like overdrive for occassional fusion work.
