Have you tried a kora (or cora)? You only need to use a thumb and finger on
each hand but tuning could take a while.

I have tried one of those, its great for arpeggio type stuff - Seckou Keita
is one of my favourites in this regard and comes from the long tradition of
songs being passed down the ages etc. I think he has an album where he sings
and plays Kora.

The tuning is hard because its more sensitive to the weather changes and
climate than our guitar. In other words it slips out of tune very easily.
Its like most of the African instruments, quite basic and crude in
construction. Think djembe compared with conga for example.

I like the kora sound but I think the construction could probably be updated
for convenience, using autoharp pegs for tuning etc. and still keep the
basic sound and ergonomics.

Its an odd one really because you could say the same for djembe - either
change the type of skin so its not sensitive to weather changes, or making
the rope system change so its more convenient.

I think part of the point of having the instrument this way though is that
you as a player take more time and keep connected to the instrument in a
much more personal way than if a machine could do the maintenance for you.

I can't explain in any "logical" terms - any more than you could say there
is a point to learning music and how to play the guitar rather than having
it all as samples on a computer which you can call on at any time.

Does that make sense?

Mr.Will

I am mystified by all of those strings right now but there are Djembe
players here who have studied in Africa who are begining to play with some
jazz groups, including one that I play with, who know how to do that. All
kidding aside, my interest in the instrument is just to add some percussion
to demos that I make on the computer.

As far as the Kora is concerned, there was a player around town who was
using one in conjunction with a looper. He would first pound on the back of
it to make a percussion track, then construct a bass track by recording
patterns played on the lower tines and then improvise over all of it. By
this means he was able to hold down solo kora gigs.

Well it really makes sense that djembe players would end up in jazz groups -
just because the whole nature of the music seems very similar to a jazz band
setup. Of course not in the music itself, but as a concept - ie several
backing things holding the grooves down while a soloist plays over the top -
various motifs etc etc.

It sounds great, there is a deepness that you don't get with congas (but I
still like them also for their other qualities). For some reason "Djembe
Madness " is now attracting a lot of viewers (check more recent postings).
You were the first to turn me on to the possibilities of this sound.

is it because you are considered a master in the art of guitar that all your

that I wish I could get traffic for my djembe outings!

I already have a guzheng and I don't have room for a kora unless I can
reduce the size of the 'bowl back', so that's the main reason. If I do that
I may as well use tuning pins too. I spotted a bodhran locally which was my
idea for a sound chamber. Just need to figure out how to insert the 3
cross-posts which support the bridge and become the top 'handles'.
