Just an fyi - a review in today's Wall Street Journal of a fairly new
10-CD box set of rare performances by pianist Art Tatum states the
following:

"The last volume is highlighted by a series of unique duets privately
taped in a New York apartment in which Tatum is paired with guitarist
Tal Farlow or with organist Joe Mooney. Farlow and Mooney play so
pianistically that in both cases the results sound like four-handed
keyboard duets -- or maybe six-handed duets, since Tatum always sounds
like he's got at least 20 fingers himself.”

I have not heard of this collaboration before and it may make for some
very interesting listening. The recordings in this box set appear to
be live, so the sound quality may be marginal.

I believe that is the box set the reviewer is talking about.

Very interesting. If anyone downloads all 21 tracks can they post
which ones have Tal on and whether they are worth it to Farlow fans
who are not completists?

Far be it from me to dissuade anyone from purchasing a recording on
which Tal is playing! However I would suggest that if one's only or
even main interest in obtaining this 10 CD set was the fact that Tal
is present then there might be a little disappointment.

As far as I know Tal only appears on a couple of tracks. The first is
"Night and Day" and on this Tatum gives him no solo space whatsoever.
Of course Tatum was one of Tal's great early influences and so one
might expect some deference but even so....

On the second track "Indiana" Tal does take a good solo and you can
also hear him playing some bass line accompaniment.

You can hear Indiana here :-

What a horrible comper Tatum was!
I kid around about hating keyboard players, but if someone comped like
that for me, I'd punch him in the face!
Tal may as well have not been playing on his solo; Tatum was too busy.
Thanks for the warning, Guy.
Is your Tal bio still available?
Could you provide a link to details onit? Thanks.

LOL! No Tatum = no bebop. Substitutions? Art basically invented them.
Quotes? Art. Upper extensions. Art. Phenomenal technique? Art.
Classical quotes? Art.

The reason Diz and Bird played as they did was because they were
trying to play like Art. They referred to him as God, and anyone with
the ears to listen will understand why.

GFY, cloth ears.

Yes it's still there. I revised it in February this year but no major
changes. I've tried to keep the price reasonable but can't do anything
about Lulu's postage rates. Currently Lulu is working on an exchange
rate of 1 UKP = 1.40 USD whereas the real rate is more like 1 UKP =
1.59 USD. So if you are in the States it could be a good time to buy
before they readjust their rates.

Here's a bit of background info to these two tracks. Around about 1952
Tatum was playing Birdland and Tal naturally went to hear him play. At
the concert Ed Fuerst (the host for "Fuerst Set") invited both Tal
and Art to his NYC apartment for brunch on the following day.

As usual Fuerst had his recording machine rolling but time was short
because Tatum had to get to a matinee performance.

So these two tunes seem to be all that was saved for posterity of a
historic musical get-together.

Yeah, if you don't want to hear Tal!
Tatum was playing the melody while Tal was blowing- gimme Eddie Costa
for comping any day!
Of course Tatum sounds great- at the expense of Tal.
