I used to religiously buy JJG. However, a relocation and an reduction
on available playing/practice time meant I stopped buying it.

I remember a few years ago readers were asked about their opinion as
to whether they would buy an electronic version, particularly for back
issues. I responded positively though I'm not sure what the general
conscensus was.

Anyway, just happened to check the site today to see what was
happening these days and I see it is possible to buy a PDF version of
the current issue. Great idea, but $8? Wow, that's expensive for a
digital file. I'm sure the $3 price difference between it and the
'dead tree' version is not equal to the printing costs, materials,
labour, shipping etc.

Given that, once you have done the pagesetting etc these days, it's
just a case of 'produce as pdf', I think this is a little expensive.
Am I being unrealistic? Put four issues on the disc (1 year's worth)
then $8-12 would be OK, but $8 for a single issue?

The content and all the work that went into it, for one thing to
ponder; not to mention what would happen to the magazine or any
magazine, if it was available on line for a price closer to zero than
the newsstand.

JJG is an expensive publication -- in print or online -- because it's
content-heavy and serves a very limited audience. If they dumbed it
down to the point where all the shredders would buy it, they could
sell it for half the current price.

wow, I'm going to start buying jjg pdfs now. $8 seems like a good
price given all the work that goes into it, and I far prefer having a
pdf to having a magazine laying around. thanks for the tip!

I don't have a problem with that. I consider the content to be the
body of what one is paying for, not the medium. From what I
understand JJG is a labor of love for Ed Benson and supporting his
project doesn't seem much different than supporting any independant
artist.

I think it's a good price too, and I frankly prefer the PDF format.
I'm glad they went with this. It saves me from having all those
magazines stacked up collecting dust.

Right. Plus it's only four times a year, so it's not really that much
money to pay for such a great resource.

I like having the print version, but if I missed one by accident, I
would settle for the pdf.

I totally agree. Besides, I would never miss one of those smokin Tony
D lessons!

I discontinued my subscription after a couple of years, but at that price I
might well buy again. Indeed, I'd be quite happy to pay 8 _euros_ if I
wanted that particular issue!

Some things in life are worth doing on the cheap, toilet paper, baked
beans, washing powder etc. But never ever skimp on your enjoyment,
fine wine, good guitars, good jazz cd's/downloads and the amazing JJG.
I would happily still have it for twice the price. You only live once
people!

About the $8 PDF: That seems to be as delivered on a CD, so a
significant chunk of that price is for media, packaging, and postage.
Not the most efficient way to deliver an electronic version, but JJG
has always been an idiosyncratic operation.

JJG only comes out four times a year and it's full of content you can't get
elsewhere. To me it's worth the money in print or pdf. ...joe

not to sound negative..but, i stopped subscribing about 2 yrs ago. Has
the mag improved at all in the last 2 years?
I remember it being a lot of ads and the interviews seemed watered
down...and dwelled on 'i met him then he met so and so' etc. Not much
in the way of content as i recall. Has it gotten any deeper into it? I
may resubscribe if it has. thanks

*I* think it has, but then again I rarely recommend movies or
restaurants, let alone magazines. Best to purchase one on line edition
and have a look-see.

I would say the quality is roughly the same and that the content continues
to be something you just can't find anyplace else. It's a unique publication
regarding a highly specialized topic. The music alone would be a bargain at
twice the price. .....joe
