Gang,

Many people "more or less" agree on the eternal Jazz CD top three. It had
"Kind of Blue" on one and "Giant Steps" on two and I forgot about number
three.

Suppose we were to make (granted, it's kind of pathetic and rather
pointless) a top three of Jazz guitar CDs, which ones would it be? You could
use any criterium like "best" or "important" or "compelling" "historic"or
"must hear" etc.

Maybe this has been done on this list earlier, but if that's the case I
haven't seen it.

Or is this one in the FAQ section?

Still, I am looking forward to finding out what you guys like best.

Dick

If I respond first, what do I win?

Ahem. In no particular order:

Wes Montgomery "The Incredible Guitar of..." (Is this the name?)
Pat Martino "Live"
Django Reinhardt "Djangology 49" Some folks say the pre-war stuff is best, but
this is a sentimental favorite for me.

Runners-up: John McLaughlin "My Goal's Beyond" and "Inner Mounting Flame".

Wow, Tom! You got two of my top 3. I'd have picked Pat Martino "Live!" and
"Djangology 49" (to me, Django got even more amazing after he'd heard bop).
But I think I'd go with "Smokin' at the Half Note" for my third.

My alternate choices would be the Storyville stuff with Getz and Raney or
maybe Jim Hall Live...

I puzzled over which Wes, but I think I play "Incredible" the most. I have a
budget label LP of Wes' with an extended take of Impressions that I really
like too. I had to make reference to the Mahavishnu stuff; when I first heard
it, it was like, "Here's something entirely different you can do with jazz
guitar." I believe I'd already heard McLaughlin with Tony Williams' Lifetime
and maybe on "In A Silent Way", but he didn't really grab me right away.

OK, to put the record straight - my collection of RMMGJers'
CDs includes Joey Goldstein's and Tom Lippincott's, as well as
Mark Kleinhaut's "Amphora" and "Secrets of Three", Rick
Stone's "Far East" and Joe Finn's "Straight Ahead", and
(it goes without saying) Jimmy Bruno's "Live At Birdland II".
I keep on coming back to all of those, for entertainment and
inspiration - a hell of a lot of talent around on this newsgroup.
Kevin Van Sant's and Clay Moore's CDs are on my shopping
list, and I sure hope Jack Zucker's going to get a CD out
sometime.

In fact, trying to figure out my favorite jazz guitar albums on
the basis of air time in my CD player, I think both Jimmy Bruno
and Mark Kleinhaut would be strong contenders for the top
three spots - my new-to-jazz girlfriend is getting to be a big fan

For some reason ever since I switched to Road Runner I never see
Dick's posts except when they're quoted in replies like this one.

Anyway, didn't we just have a "10 best jazz guitarist" thread? now you
want to pare it down to 3?

I can't do it.

....well, thinking about it again, I guess it's fairly safe to say
that in terms of historical importance CC's "solo flight" and Wes'
"Incredible Jazz Guitar" are probably near consensus 1 & 2. #3 would
be harder, something from Django, Barney, Jim Hall? Bright Size
