he leaves you alone" - me
hm! been there, and going again soon.
had a bag of children's songs in general, but not necessarily lullabies. Some
that did work on occasion, though, as instrumentals.
All the Pretty Little Horses
The Barney Song (This Old Man, not Swedish Pastry)
Doggie In The Window
Brahms' - sorta de rigeur, I guess
Clementine
Big Rock Candy Mountain
I've Been Workin On the Railroad
Santa Claus Is Comin To Town - (I know, but it was by request and worked)
It's kind of fun stretching your chops over simple and sometimes catchy
melodies and more triadic accompaniments. They might make a face if you play
any diminished majors! Have fun, and congrats!

I can hardly bid a soul goodnight without thinking of the tune
"Goodnight" from the Beatles white album. Thanks to the life altering
records thread I have the Beatles on my mind.
My mother used to sing a killer lullaby "Little Man You've Had A Busy
Day". According to the All Music Guide, Chet Baker, Ruby Braff, Bing
Crosby, Johnny Griffin, Mel Lewis, Art Tatum, Mel Torme, and Sarah
Vaughn all recorded it. Guess I'm not the only one who liked it. I'll
bet Mom got it from Bing.

I think that this version of "Over the Rainbow" is by the late Israel
Kamakawiwo'ole, aka "Bruda Iz." It also mixes freely with "Wonderful
World" which is itself a great song for kids.

There was this wonderful little tune in a Russian musical I watched
ages ago. It's based on a fairy tale of a goat, her seven children and
a badass wolf who wants to eat the lil' ones. When the mother goes out
she sinfs this tune for the children, instructing them to only open
the door to their home when they hear her sing that tune. Somehow the
wolf finds out about this and starts trying to mimic the mother's
song, outside the goat family's door.
I managed to dig up these lyrics from the dubbed version:
"Mommy's Home":
Mommy's home
Now you can open the door
Don` be afraid now, not anymore
Mommy's Home
I`ve brought for each one of you
Strawberry coated with honeydew
Only you and I can sing this song as no one knows
Listen to each little word carefully
And before you all come running quickly to the door
Be sure the only one you open to is me
Mommy's home
Now you can open the door
Don` be afraid now, not anymore
My axe is at the repairman's now so I can't be arsed to pluck the
melody line now, but I'll get back to you on that. It really is a
wonderful little tune.

I'll See You In My Dreams. -I still remember it from my life changing
guitar record, "Strictly Guitar" by Merle Travis.
Sleep Baby Sleep, (Thy father guards the sheep.) -Perfect for reharmonizing,
one of the true classic lullabies and to my ear the best and sweetest.
Scarlet Ribbons
Tenderly
Treasures Untold - Jimmy Rodgers
I Bid You Goodnight - A Bahaman tune. Joseph Spence->Grateful Dead
Hush Little Baby - I feel good every time I sing this. My kids' mileage may
vary.
Sleep Sleep Sleep - Kenny Chandler
Stardust - Very effective as a lullaby. Has sent many happily to bed over the
years, as have
Mood Indigo and
Prelude to A Kiss

this may seem a bit corny to some, but Fred ("Mr.") Rogers had some nice kids'
songs. A friend of mine just sent me some lyrics of his as a tribute, and
there really is a nice vibe to his whole "message" for really little kids
without the banality of the Care Bears and Barney.

When my sister asks me to take care of the kids, I usually put on some
nice mellow sounds from the 1970s, like Alice Cooper's adorable "Dead
Babies".
It always prompts some type of reaction from the little tykes, if not
always ideal:0
