Nothing big..but i said in a recent post that i would get back on my
results of changing that horrible gold thing that Gibson calls a
'pickup' with a Kent Armstrong floating humbucker on my JS.
I recently put on a Bartolini on my epi regent with great results...so
i thought the KA on the JS would be similar.
Well...its AWESOME. The difference from the stock 'thing' is night and
day.
If you are looking for a floating pup...i tried a vintage DeArmond -
they sound ok, but are a bit clunky to install, and do not sound as
smooth and deep as the KA (on MY guitar..yur mileage may vary).
Its a bit heavy in the mids...but i like that and i can get a total JS
sound...for a reference, if u like the smith sound, this is the set
up.
You will need a pickguard to mount it on etc...but its the best
floater i ever heard, and the Bartolini is up there also. Output is
way more than i expected...i really cuts through and you can get a
burrell sound with the right amp.
Its as close to a built in as you can get...but its a floater.
I can now use my Gibson Johnny Smith as a guitar instead of
furniture.
THats a GOOD thing! If ur looking for a floater and dont believe the
hype...surrender...its all true.

I have four floating Kent Armstrong pickups on my guitars. One of them
is called a "paf" and it has 12 adjustable pole pieces. I also have a
single coil Kent Armstrong with 6 adjustable poles and a couple of
Kent's floating mini-humbuckers, that don't have adjustable pole
pieces. They are all great pickups, but my favourite is the paf. It is
really a floating version of a full-sized humbucker. It has very
strong output and makes the guitar sound like it has a built-in
pickup. I highly recommend that pickup.

But which KA model did you put on your JS? He makes several floaters.

Like i say..its the KA humbucker..its the paf that keith is referring
to.
The others are single coils. Also..its the one that KA winds..not a WD
version.
I got it at archtop.com...im not a fan of that site, but it was the
only place i could find it. I got a link to email Kent directly..but
he never would respond so i had to buy from archtop.
If someone knows other dealers out there, please let me know..although
i dont think i need anymore pups..
thanks!

That also is whart I settled on for my Johnny Smith. I also found that the
commercial Kent Armstrongs are totally different than the ones you have
wound by Kent directly. He is now rewinding a pickup for a D'Aquisto jazz
Line. I can't wait to hear it.
For my Epi Zephyr I have ordered a P2, 9000 wound from Fralin. I should get
it soon; it has great reviews.

You said the others are single coils. That is not correct. I also have
two of Kent's hand made "smooth top" floating humbuckers and they are
dual coil pickups, the same size as the original Johnny Smith pu. The
smooth top is shown on archtop.com's site as well. They are very
nice pickups, but I prefer the full sized one called a floating paf,
which seems to be the one you have.

I'm getting a pair of Biltoft humbucker-sized CC pickups to replace the
humbuckers in an Ibanez AF86 that I got recently. I'll let yall know how
that turns out. I'm expecting really good results. I'm also gonna replace
the pickups in an Epi Dot with SD Jazz and JB (I'll probably split the JB
with a push/pull).

Yes Maj6...i remember you had a WD version of the KA? I figured this
would be different. Lemme know how the fralin works out. I wish he
made a built in 7 string pup..i need something for my Ibanez Af207.
Nothing sounds good on that thing yet. Any suggestions?

I probably would look to Loller, he also winds steel guitar pickups. It's
hard to get to him though, he has a manager that trys to handle everything.
If you can get to him he will chat for hours and he is exceptionally
knowable.

How did you repair where the JS bracket had been rec into your neck?

On the advice of Roger Borys, I switched out the SD/Seth Lover on my B-120 for a pickup KA makes especially for the B-120.
As a result, I'm now able to use my PV EFX112 for both pop/rock and jazz.
With the SD/SL, it sounded terrible for jazz. KA da man!
Now I don't know what to do with the SD/SL. My three options might be:
1-Put it on my Mex. Strat
2- put it on my Parker P-44
3- Put it on a cheap archtop- Comins GSC ES1, Ibanez spruce top, or Epi JP.

I'm with you, Lun. I also prefer his single coil pickups on an archtop. I like the clarity and articulation.
