I just read in this month's "Acoustic Guitar" that archtop luthier Paul
Gudelsky was murdered in his home in May. Does anybody have any
information about this?

There has been enormous speculation regarding the circumstances of Paul
Gudelsky's murder from within as well as outside the music business.
Please don't construe this as a slam or flame in any way but adding to
that speculation somehow seems inappropriate. I would strongly suggest
anyone interested to contact the local police department and/or district
attorney. After all Paul was murdered.

Sometimes ASCII loses the sensitivity that you can have in a normal
conversation.

I was actually looking for confirmation.

It unfortunately looks as though the magazine article was correct.

I am Paul Gudelsy's one and only student. According to his wife, someone came into the shop and wanted money. Paul said no so he was shot and then the murderer stole a lot of guitars from the house

That's sad.

I worked for Paul in 1995/1996. I swept his shop and helped him rotating the wood. He showed me how to buff the orange pitting off of the guitars. He said I would have to pay for an apprenticeship, but if I was willing to sweep the floor and keep the shop clean, I could hang out with him. I helped him with the NAMM show in Anaheim and really enjoyed hanging out with Paul. Pauls shop was at the base of the hill down the drive from his house. I forget the name of the Canyon he lived on... I think it was Bonsal Canyon. It's been too many years. I was interested in building bass guitars which Paul thought was a waste of energy. After playing one of his guitars... I totally understood what he meant. I got to sit at the Paul's bench, which was Jimmie's Bench, Which was Johnny's bench... I never met either of the other two great luthiers. But Paul was an amazing man. I found out that he had been murdered while at Dusty's Guitar Kingdom in Oceanside / Carlsbad. I couldn't believe it. Paul was a mountain of a man on the inside. I miss him. And though it's been many years since I worked for him, for free, just to learn... I think of Paul often. May God rest his soul. I'm glad he didn't stick to sculpting stone. His wood sculptures will sing sweetly for centuries to come.
