Man, I'm getting addicted to these things (luckily I've got some gigs later
today that will get me away from the computer). This one is different in
that you don't often hear Hall playing these type of up-tempo
tunes----Charlie

It is worth buying the "Jazz Casual" session from which this is
extracted, which is available from any seller of DVD's. It has the
whole show and an interview. Lots of the Jazz Casuals are available
now.

You guys are killing me! Sonny is ridiculous on this. I always thought
this was his most fertile period, though I loved him in the 50s. He
just took it out more somehow and let in other influences---while still
swinging his tail off and constructing solos from the melody. I really
love On Impulse, Alfie, East Broadway Run Down. He was just a friggin'
panther on this thing, all over it.

Jim had a handle on the tempo, some thematic ideas, and he built
nicely within those ideas. He knew he couldn't keep up with Sonny.
Hell, SONNY has enough trouble doing that. Ben Riley is a badass and
had a lot to do with that group's sound getting over. Cranshaw too.

Yeahhhhh! Sonny and Jim!!!!

I think some of Sonny's best work was on:
-  "Saxophone Colossus"
- "Sonny Side Up" with Diz and Stitt

Another interesting recording was with Miles where Sonny and Bird were both playing tenor.

Surprised to find him playing single-pickup 175 like my own. I've GOT
to get that thing to a shop this decade...

Also suprised to find him with his thumb over the top of the neck so much.

I can see the secret of Hall's playing - watch his left foot: it's
flapping about like a Union Jack in a stiff breeze. Pity about his
non-classical left hand: think what a better musician he could have
etc etc

Actually I was going to mention the way his left hand held the pick.
Frankly it looked awkward and cumbersome for him. I didn't think it
was the bona-fide Benson methodology which I've always possible only
with a thumb joint that can go backwards about 15 degrees.

Did the video come from this DVD?:

This one (see below) is pretty cool too. Sonny Rollins has stayed true
to himself all these years. He always writes songs with good melodies
regardless how things change around him.

This particular DVD that you link to on Amazon won't work if you live
in Region 1, i.e., North America basically. It is region 2.

However, the Sonny Rollins Jazz Casual is available for Region 1 and I
think you can order it from the Aebersod catelog www.jazzbooks.com

Which recording was this, with Sonny and Bird?

Unfortunately I don't have these recordings. Phil Schaap, jazz historian, has played them on his show from Columbia University, NYC, NY, station WKCR. Try going to  wkcr.org and maybe you can find a link where you can write to Phil, or anyone at the station that can point you in the right direction. He should be able to tell you where and if these recordings are available. I'll continue to do research and if I find anything, I will write to you.

It's on Miles Davis "Collectors Items". Bird is listed a Charlie Chan
or some such nonsense.

Chan was his wife's name and he was getting around record label
restrictions.

You know I never got the connection to his wife's name. I always
thought it was a reference to the sleuth.

Chan is now Mrs. Phil Woods, no?

They are divorced now. But she was Mrs. Woods for years.
