Hey all,

I just saw the duo Russell Malone and Benny Green play. It was a very fun
show, and they seemed like they were having as much fun as we were, even
though Benny had a cold. Their set consisted of a few standards, but also
an unusual number of more contemporary pieces (I tend to like hearing
something new done in the jazz format).

Anyway, I was looking through the archives, but didn't see any reference
to Russell's new guitar. I did find that he used to play an L5, but this
was definitely no L5. The headstock looked very D'Angelico like. Could
he be playing one of the production overseas ones? Or maybe the
"official" Michael Lewis ones?

Anyway, if anyone knows...

Thanks,
-Garrett

I think he is now a D'Angelico endorser. The duo album with Benny Green
lists the D'Angelico website.

You all are correct. Russell is a collector. He plays a L-5, Vestax
D'Angelico, Super 5, and Buscarino. The last couple of times I saw him play
the L-5 and the Vestax D'Angelico.

When I saw him he was playing an Ibanez L5-oid box,
but that was many years ago.

He has been playing the D'Angelico quite a bit (at least when he came
to Ravinia in Chicago he was...). He has the Vestax produced model.

Thanks to all who responded. The guitar really didn't sound all THAT
great (his playing, on the other hand, was pretty phenomenal), but it
could've been the venue...or the sound people...or me.
