It looks like we don't have to worry about this for a while (at least this
year anyway:

I don't know that I have seen a jazz conductor before. Interesting
idea.

The singer looks black to me , so he is probably working in Beijing
with what looks like some sort of hotel band for this Ikea gig
Jazz is just getting popular in Beijing and Shanghai, attracting a lot
of players from all over the world to play. In the past I have heard a
few excellent players ,who dont necessirily make it to you tube.
Suprisingly, there are a limited few local players whom are not bad
too esp in Shanghai. I'll be up there again next week so will be able
to update on whats going on at the local level. In the meantime here
is a link to a guitar player who lives in HK , but I guess that is now
part of China too to check out. http://www.eugenepao.com/

The few things that are online from Bejing lack the sophistication that you
guys in Hong Kong demonstrated but it is hard to make a generalization from
that. There are plenty of unsophisticated groups here in the U.S., as you
say it is a matter of who manages to get on You Tube. I was surprised that
there was any jazz at all there.

Given what they were playing, I'm now wondering if it takes decades
for music to make it 'round the world <g>

It makes more sense after seeing Skip's reply, the last one could very well
be an American lounge act that was booked over there.

Hi Charles,

I was contacted about a year ago by a friend of a friend who was
Chinese and looking to start booking American jazz musicians in China.
These were lounge gigs in 5 star hotels, but when the details started
to emerge it was the SOS, they only wanted a singer + pianist, image
ruled, and the pay was crap. One vocalist contemplated going, but
nothing ever came of it. Some months later I called the contact back
just to see what had happened and didn't hear back, so I assumed he
(wisely) got out of the game.

There are guys here who are playing those kind of gigs. Most of them require
a female singer with a backing trio. The thing is they aren't playing
Beijing but Hong Kong and other places that until recently weren't a part of
Communist China. Some of the musicians that are doing them really like it.
They work for six months over there and then come back here for six.One bass
player said that there were a lot of Casinos over there that were looking
for a variety of different types of groups.

The guy I play with is from Australia and the members of his old funk
band just went to China on one of these six-month gigs, playing lounge
jazz every night in a boozy casino. They're young and they went for a
laugh thinking it'd be their version of the Beatles in Hamburg.

I went through that same thing Clay, it was more like 5 years ago I
was all set to go do a 3 month house gig at a restaurant/hotel in
Chengdu when at the last minute they decided they wanted a singing
pianist. The pay was actually going to be decent.
