Has anyone come across an alternative to the vintage Deaarmond pickups. I have 2 that have crapped out on me and would like to find an alternative to amplify my old Excel. Don't really want to spend $500 for another Dearmond.
thanks

The Kent Armstrong ultrathin ("2-D micro humbucker") is OK, but hums when
you let go of the strings a bit more than I'd like. The regular KA Johnny
Smith may be a bit too thick. The pole screws stick out of the bottom, and
so one should be able to grind those down a bit. One pickup MFR claimed that
that would make the Johnny Smith brighter, which is a bit frightening, since
it's already plenty bright.

But one or the other of the KA pups should be fine.

I had a Zollar installed on my Epi Triumph to replace a rusty
DeArmond. Worked great. Attached to the pickguard.

That was in the mid 90's so Zollars might not still be available.

I got one in 1964. Still have it.

The pro players used the one with tone and volume. I had the cheaper one. About $20, as I recall.

The reason that everybody used D'Armond was, as far as I know, because it was the only one for sale. I don't ever recall seeing any other brand back then. And, I bought mine at the original Sam Ash store.

Now, I guess, it's the way to get the authentic vintage sound. But back then, nobody picked it because it was great. People picked it because there was nothing else to choose from. Of course, they did sound good.

How about one of the reproductions from Guild? At $130 they are much
more reasonable and the reports are that they sound just like the
vintage ones.

My D'Armond has a screw on connector of a size that was hard to find back in the 60's. I recall a parts guy calling it "an oddball size". I managed to get one that was the right diameter and thread, but not as deep.

Apparently, Switchcraft still makes the right one. I didn't know that back then.
