You can still find my transcription of Goin'Ahead (travels album)
on: <http://homepage.mac.com/micih/>
Michael
Mark L. Small transcribed Metheny's solo in "Phase Dance" in Guitar
Player
Magazine in Dec. 1981. Awesome but difficult licks with fast 1/16 notes.
Thanks Mark!!!!!!
Does anyone know where I can get more true Metheny solos? The fake
book gives me just chords and measures for Metheny's music but no
material for soloing and the Pat Metheny song book is bogus for not
giving you squat for soloing material.
By the way, I'll let you in on a little secret: if you can get a few of
his
solos down, your hair will stand on end. No lie! It's that awesome.
So please anybody???

Here's a rundown of the things I know about:
There are a couple of books:
Pat Metheny Guitar Tab, contains 12 transcribed solos from Bright Size
Life--Letter From Home.
bright size life, facing west, have you heard, james, last train home,
letter from home, message to a friend, phase dance (head only), so may
it secretly begin, the bat, travels, unity village
The original Pat Metheny Group Album contains:
San Lorenzo, Phase Dance, Jaco, Aprilwind, April Joy and Lone Jack
Wise Publications, ISBN 0-7119-6387-8
This is a British book, possibly distributed by AMSCO. Check on the
web
and in HMV/Virgin Megastores
The solo to phase dance is in:
Greatest Jazz Solos for guitar tab (AM92399), published by the same
folks. Wise Publications
Pat Metheny: Improvisations Concepts and Techniques
Transcriptions of 5 songs, plus musical analysis (in french): All the
things you are, yellow fields, lonely woman, round trip, humpty dumpty
HL Music/Editions Henry Lemoine, 24 rue Pigalle, 75009 Paris.
ISMN M-2309-6065-6
Available from Guitar Solo/GSP
1401 Clement Stt.
San Francisco, CA 94118

There is supposedly a more detailed analysis of Metheny's style (with
transcriptions) by Luiggi someone that was published in Italian and
translated into french that was available through Oscar Music in
paris.
However they didn't have it when I was there in May 2001, and had no
idea if they would get another copy. (If someone has this, please
contact me via email).
Metheny says he is also working on a book of solo transcriptions.
"Solar" is available in "Jazz Guitar Bible" (along with about 25 other
tunes by other guitarists).
Hal Leonard, ISBN 0-634-02562-7
"All the Things you Are" is in "Best of Jazz Guitar"
Hal Leonard, ISBN 0-634-02266-0
More esoteric is
Jazz Guitar Complete Collection, Vol. 2
Shinko Music Pub. Co. Limited
ISBN 4-401-15277-8
This is a Japanese book with transcriptions of "Lonely Woman" and "Old
Folks" along with 13 other tunes by other players.
Guitar Magazine (now known as Guitar One, formerly known as Guitar
Extra) has published several Metheny transcriptions that may be
available as back issues.
Guitar Extra, "Phase Dance" Spring 1990
Guitar One, "Solar" November 1991
Guitar One, "All the Things you Are," March 2002
Acoustic Guitar also published at least one transcription.
Acoustic Guitar, "Message to a Friend", April 1997
Guitar Player, "Pat Answers" March 2001 (no transcriptions)
Finally, don't neglect on-line sources:

Asked also about when his solo book will be out by Hal Leonard:
They said they had just started on it and expect it to be out sometime
next year 2003. Let's hope in January!
Word of Advise: Some of his stuff is pretty difficult to transcribe
cold.
I usually slow it down using some software package. I use Plasma . . .
because of the " looping". It doesn't do time compression/expansion
(SONAR XL does but costs too much), so the parts that are super fast, I
do a note at a time.
this in effect like time expansion. This might be a pain the ass, but if
I continue repeating on a note per note basis I can get the same effect
(although it takes probably longer than if I used some software that has
time expansion ).
Hope this helps!
