I found a library with a bunch of KB records, and it's interesting to hear the way his sound and playing changed from the 50s to the present.

The LP I'm talking about was recorded in 1968 on Verve, and it has a picture of him playing a blonde archtop on the cover.

My guess is that it's his D'Angelico with a DeArmond 1100, which he used on a similar LP from that time period,"Night Song", which also featured him and a studio big band.

I listened to the record he did with Trane just before I played this one, and generally dislike his sound on all of his 1950s LPs, but his sound and playing on are definitely my fave KB.

I did a search on it, and that's definitely his blonde D'Angelico on the cover.
I wonder why he stopped playing it, and switched to the Super 400?

Yup, I prefer his sound in the days he used that guitar.
That pickup and wiring with I think 1/8" min jacks(But I'm not sure) might have been a bit delicate for long term travel on airlines etc.

He plays that giutar on that Video with Grant Green and Barney Kessel, but seems to be having trouble dialing in his rental amp on that gig in the UK.

Mandolin Bros. was asking 75K for Kenny's D'A. IMHO, it's worth it- that was the best guitar ever made...

My D'a has the D'earmond with mini 1/8th jack and adjustable pole pieces.
Through a Fender Twin reverb I can get close to the sound if I could play
like Kenny Burrell........but suffice to say I cannot. For some reason that
guitar/pickup combination sounds wonderful with a Fender Twin reverb and the
reverb up a bit. Trouble is that only under very low volume as the guitar
will feedback in an instant, not really practical unless in studio or
controlled environment.

Holy shit, I already got the p/u today!
I still have the original DeArmond RC 1000 volume/tone control; I wonder if I should connect it to the p/u?
It looks like this p/u has to be screwed in to the neck w/ tiny screws with the through the thin gold bar included, but can it also get attached to the pickguard?
Or maybe the old RC 1000 volume/tone control is attached to the pickguard?
Either way, it looks like I'm going to be seeing Roger Borys pretty soon...

i guess that over the years the stage volume got louder, with larger bands etc. so the D'Angelico couldn't handle it any more - with the thick top of the electric Super's you can really turn up without problems.... still later he even taped over the F-holes on that guitar ! i played his sunburst DA at Mandolin Brs some 15 years ago : it was near mint, just gorgeous and priced at something like 45 grand :-)
