On most Frisell cds and the ones he appears on with Joey Baron, his guitar
seems to have an elongated sound. Does anyone know how he gets it?

he uses a delay pedal and some reverb. he used to use a volume pedal and
compression but hasn't in the last 5 years or so. he is awesome.

The liner notes for Marc Johnson's Bass Desires say he used a guitar synth
on that record. Any specific info about that, like what kind did he use?
Has he used a synth on any of his solo recordings? The liner notes aren't
always very detailed. I haven't seen him play live since I saw Naked City
in the early nineties, and I can't remember what kind of rig he had.
Awesome show, though. I remember that much.

In the German Magazin Gitarre & Bass from Mai 2000 you can read something
about Bill's equipment:

Dreadnought from Collings with Fishman-Rare-Earth-Pickup
Gibson ES 446 S
Line6 Delay Modeler DL6
Boss EchoPod
Lexicon MPX 100
Ibanez Stereo-Chorus
Two Fender Tube Amps

as someone else mentioned, his gear has changed around considerably the last
few years, but the "classic" Frisell rig (mid '80s through early '90s) is
basically;

TC Electronics compressor
RAT distortion pedal
Ernie Ball volume pedal
Electro Harmonix 16 second digital delay
Boss digital delay pedal
Alesis Microverb
stereo outs of the Microverb feeding two amps

The first time I saw him play in 1988 this was his setup, and he was playing a
Gibson SG junior (one pickup in the bridge position).
The next time I saw him play, which was in the early '90s, he was using a
Sadowsky strat style guitar and had started using a Digitech Echo + instead of
the EH delay, and at the time he was also using a Lexicon Jam Man. He told me
at the time that he'd replaced the EH delay with the Digitech one simply
because the EH one kept breaking and he was having a hard time finding anyone
to fix it.
As was previously pointed out, in the mid '90s his "big change" came when he
quit using the volume pedal and the compressor. I get the impression that more
recently he's been experimenting with a lot of different guitars and effects,
though I don't keep track as rabidly as I used to.

Probably a rack effect.

There is a section about his gears in the video tape, The Guitar Artistry Of
Bill Frisell.

I've seen Frisell a number of times, late 80's, early 90's. If you want
that 'elongated' sound, the basic way to get it is with a volume pedal and
a delay. Use the volume pedal to cut off the attack of the note; the delay
will then give you that stretched out sound.

The synth he uses on Bass Desires is an old analog Roland GR-300; it sounds
like an electric violin. He uses it with the oscillators tuned in 5ths to
play the head and those big chords on "Resolution". I have one of these
synths, and it's really great. The tracking is the fastest of any guitar
synth that has ever been invented. The new GR-33 comes close, but is not
quite there!

This is the same synth that Pat Metheny uses all the time. Frisell and
Abercrombie both used it a lot in the '80's, but I don't think they do
anymore.
