Dunno about Burrell, but my teach, who's a Burrell fan, gets the killer
clean big Gibson sound from his Super 400 using D'Addario Chromes XL "Jazz
Light" gage: .011 to .050.

Guitar solos start at around 5:00 in both these. (Drumless standards trio,
which is about to have a new CD out.)

Great vibe!

Who the hell is that? What an amazing tone!!

Give us some more details about his set up, etc. High action, I take it?

I haven't asked him to let me try his guitar, but I don't think the action
is particularly high: my impression is is that he lets the amp do the work.
Whatever, he sounds amazing on that instrument, which he has played for 30
years or so: one of the most monogamous guitarists ever. He uses a fairly
thin pick (0.7 mm) and does Benson picking, at least to the extent of using
the reverse attack angle bit. He uses the side of the pick for chords and
tells me to think about making Wes thumb-like sounds when hitting chords.
Works for him. The thin pick is more about rhythmic precision in lines than
sound, though. I've just switched from Fender extra heavy picks, and find
that he's right about the rhythmic precision bit, and clarity is getting
better. The loss in the fatness of tone, though, means I'll have to work
harder on that.

He usually just plays the guitar nearest at hand acoustically in the guitar
stop storeroom he teaches out of, but had the Super 400 along last lesson
and plugged in, and the sound was amazing.

That's some very nice playing and great tone, he's definitely influenced by Burrell.

Kenny Burrell seems to have steel strings on his guitar in this video, the sound comes from his head and fingers.
