Jim Mullen is one of those rare musicians who can actually say something
on the instrument. That said, this is not his best playing but it does
show the guitar is plenty good.
...but he has the ability to make any guitar sound good :)

What is he quoting at 1:27 ?
Sweet Georgia Brown.
the octave that he starts on the bridge are out of tune, could be the
guitar, but probably he isn't tuned up right.

Unbelievable what Jim can do with that thumb.

Man, I have never seen a guy play w/ his thumb that fluidly! Great
lines too.
Did you see there is a YT transcription of the whole solo? Man,
somebody did their homework!
Saw the link but didn't bite...yet. I'd just rather listen to the cat
and his ideas.
Not to change the topic even further from Aria guitars, but it'd be neat
if there was a DVD of Mullen's performances. I'd also love a DVD of
Bickert and a few other idea maestro's. For some reason I want the
visual to accompany the audio nowadays so I rarely buy CD's or mp3.

It's nice to have that transcription, though, since there are a few
ideas I want to pull out of it. Mullen is yet another relatively
unknown master.

Hey, there's this new player everybody's talking about! Wes Montgomery? :-)
Fair point...but Mullen's thumb is more like a pick than Montgomery's,
that is he does more "pick like" lines (if that means anything). To me
they're almost different approaches.

Interesting, do you have any clips?

I think Mullen is using a lot more upstrokes than Wes did.
You're probably right. He also quotes more, seems faster, and takes it
out quite a bit. I dig him.

Bill
Hey Bill,
I have a Guild X-150 that I am selling because of the body depth (3
3/8") and the tone isn't what I was looking for in a laminate. There
is an Aria FA-70 being sold in my area, but it's about an hour drive
away so I was hoping to get some input on tone, feel, weight, etc.
from anyone who'd had one. Anyway, it has been hard to sell the Guild,
so I'm going to have to lower the price. So I may miss out on the
Aria, but that's alright.
Although I did like my Aria FA 70, I eventually let it go because of the weight and size and the fact that it could feedback at higher gig volumes. Replaced it with an Ibanez AF105 (lightish, smaller, robust and versatile) for gigging and an Eastman 805 CE (good acoustic tone, smaller body but more fragile and expensive than the Aria) for home use.
