Hello,

I'm looking for advice in finding a luthier to do an apprenticeship under.

I live in the western Pennsylvania area, and I don't think there is a huge
supply of these craftsman around here. Besides the obvious, what advice does
anyone have. Are the any resources that could help me find a luthier that
would take on an apprentice?

Has anyone does this before?

I have never built a guitar from scratch but have tinkered around with them.
I have a deep interest in learning this craft, but really don't have the
money to go to formal schooling.

I would eventually like to take it from a hobby to a career.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tom

I learned a tremendous amount from the Martin factory tour, then spending
the day at Guitarmaker's Connection. Frank Finnochio was more than generous
with his time. I bought a kit that day (perhaps a good starting place) and
built a guitar I've been enjoying for 7 years now.

I'd check with Dale Unger in Stroudsburg, I know that Dale even gives
archtop building classes. Check with Dale at

------$400 or so in 1992, but then I bought a lot of tools and sundries. 6

My main resources for this project were Cumpiano's Guitarmaking Tradition
and Technology and Stewart-Macdonald's video "Making a Herringbone Acoustic
Guitar".

http://www.stewmac.com/

http://www.martin-guitar.com/ then follow the GMC link

http://svlg.org/links.htm for many more luthiery links.

There is a tremendous amount of material available on the web. Learn to use
your search engine and you will be amazed at the number of hours that can be
frittered away looking at cool stuff. There is even an online course about
to begin August 30th about making a small guitar or uke. Follow the link to
MIMF or there is a posting in RMMGA or RMM.builders, I forget which.

Good luck! I hope you get at least half the satisfaction from your project
that I got from mine.

I talked with Dale about a week ago -- I just ordered an American Legend from
him. Anywho, he does give an 8-day workshop in which you will build from
scratch one of his fantastic guitars. Give him a call.

In addition to contacting Dale & Frank re their archtop course, I suggest
you consider joining GAL (Guild of American Luthiers) and ASIA (Association
of Stringed Instrument Artisans). Visit their websites @ www.luth.org &
www.guitarmaker.org, respectively. ASIA publishes a directory of members in
which you may find other luthiers in your area worth contacting. Good luck.

Martin still sells kits and they are pretty inexpensive starting at $320
