I rarely even get close to finding that flow. Probably never will. I
am always amazed at watching master guitarists make this look *so* easy,
so logical, so inevitable- whereas when I try my fingers look like a
drunken starfish stumbling home along a guitar neck.
Watching the Joe Pass and Roy Clark videos instilled the same sense of
awe. Both were superb in that session, but Joe in particular found
things to say in a musical idiom outside his usual haunts.

I saw him play in Dublin a month ago in a small bar and he is still
playing great.
I find it really heartening to see how many great players make such
nice comments about him (Pat Martino, Jimmy Bruno etc.). On the
comments for that video I can recognise a couple of regular posters to
this newsgroup.
Dan Adler mentioned a version of Alone Together from his Louis the
First Album (with bass and drums and overdubbed second guitar) which
is no longer available. The comments says he asked Louis about it and
Louis said that was just a demo album. He may have been joking as it
is a great record.

I dunno, I find that kind of solo gtr to be one of the most boring
things ever created in mankind's illustrious history. I call that
stuff GEEZER GUITAR. As in JUST JAZZ GEEZER GUITAR. Only listened to
by other guitarists....

Actually remember back in the jurrassic period on this NG when some
guy posted a diatribe that had a classic header. something like
"change this NG's charter to RMM geezers " ....anyone recall that
episode??

Louis Stewart is one of my favorites and I find his solo guitar

I can remember seeing (and hearing) him play a chord melody version of
Send in the Clowns on Irish TV in the 70s. This was similar to his
version on his L the First record. I was just a kid, did not know a
chord from a hat and thought it was beautiful and so did my older
sister who had just seen him life at a gig and she also remembered him
doing that tune and thought it was beautiful both times. Neither of
us knew anything about jazz or even much about guitar (still don't).
LS appeals to lots of people who do not know any jazz at all.

I see what you mean...but LS has been working and recording since the
70s, and he's played with a lot of other great jazz players...His live
clips on youtube generally have attentive, appreciative audiences. So
I guess somebody must be listening besides just other guitar players.

Not true! ....the geezers at the nursing home appreciate listening
to me very much, and they don't play a lick.

Hey normally I dont play out a huge amount (but contrary to my
reputation I have always gigged for years and years actually), but in
the last 4 months I have lucked into a regular 3 nite a week!!!
Woohoo, for me, sad - no doubt - for my poor audience....Actually the
business of "internet" gigging is so damn funny. I read a put-down on
the gear page where some dude was trying to knock Jack Z. He said
something like:
"yeah Jaz you talk big and then you probably tell yr wife, see you
lata honey, I am going downstairs to the basement for my gig"....Ha!!!

Good onya Dan!!! I dont know man, I find that typical solo gtr thing
like so dated and tired, but this is me you're talking to, right, so I
suspect you and all my legions of fans take my pronouncements w/ a
grain or 10 of salt.....

Ok I get your thesis now. It takes a GEEZER to like GEEZER music. Or
the corollary, it takes a GEEZER to know one....which worries me,
because it seems I had little difficulty in identifying the offending
JJGG stuff myself....

I've just come in from playing a trio gig with your bass buddy Fiona
Lugg. Outdoors in 34 degree heat (that's nearly 100 for Statesiders)
and I had a blocked ear from a recent virus so hardly ideal conditions
but we got there in the end.
