Heya,

Recently I was in Spain without my trusty Heritage 575, and just ended up
playing on some guitars out there, some ok some great some really awful. But I
have to admit, I love the feel of a wider neck - and was wondering is there any
real jazz guitar with a wider neck than my heritage 575? I grew up playing
classical, so to be honest that neck feels natural, whereas with jazz guitars I
have to be a little more delicate(not complaining, just stating).

If anyone knows of a wider neck style guitar, can you let me know?

Some of the more common neck sizes ( widths) I 've seen are 1 11/16" and 1
3/4". There is a gtr at www.archtop.com that is
1 13/16". I like the feel of the 1 3/4" width, especially if the radius is
12" and is not to big ( club like). IT seems like a lot of the custom
archtops will come with a 1 3/4" width. while production gtrs are at 1
11/16".If you get a chance try out a Benedetto and see if you like that
size.

Let's see, Classicals have necks of 2" or more wide at the nut. Some Taylor
fingerpicking acoustics have 1.75" necks. Most others guitars have 1.68", probably
including your Heritage.

Where do you want to be on this scale. I'd think a 2" wide neck (at the nut) would
be problematic for jazz chording or fast runs with the relatively narrow flatwounds
(when compared to the telephone cables that classical guitarists use). A 1.75" neck
would be excellent. I had one on a '56 Silvertone electric archtop. I loved that
neck. All others have been around 1.62-1.68".\

In any case, there was some discussion here about that a year or so ago. Some
brands emerged as offering wider necks, but I can't remember what they were.

You should try some Ibanez guitars like the George Benson, Pat Metheny, or John
Scofield model. These all have wide necks. I don't like Gibson necks because
they are too small compared to the Ibanez necks.

Hofner Archtops measure 1.75" at the nut. They also have full 25.5" scale with
a 16" body.

Hi ,
Please correct if I am wrong, but my understanding is that the width of the
necks on the GB, PM and JS model are all 1 11/16 wide with a 12 " radius
which makes it the same as the ES-175 , ES-335 and other Gibson models. There
is a difference in how the gtrs feel which may be due to the actual shape of
the neck . fret /string placment .

I'm only going from memory, but weren't GRETCH guitars back when
they made Country Gents and Nashville's (The Chet Atkins era 60's to
70's) made with a wider than normal neck?

You might try the Gibson Chet Atkins series. I believe they're 1 3/4"
nut width. Aren't the Gibson and Ibanez Johnny Smith models also 1
3/4" nuts?

I haven't a clue really with regard to that, I never measured or anything.
I will say you're right, some of the jazz stretches are quite difficult with a
classical neck, but I aren't really doing single line stuff for the now -
really fingerstyle, which I think a wider neck would be useful for.

Thanks for all the info. I will save it and look around.

I have an Epi JP and a Washburn 335 clone. They both have the same
scale and the same size nut, but the 335 neck is vastly more
comfortable for me to play. I also have a Tele, and like the longer
scale, but the 335 neck still does it for me. No idea why.

The neck on the ES-135 has a lovely feel (which some reffer to as a baseball
bat kinda feel). Also, I have played the Ibanez PM model, an have to say
that the neck did feel meatier than the 175. But maybe its just feel...
