Fantastic! That's some joyous sounding shredding! Definitely got to
hear him playing out sometime. Does he not have a website with a
calendar?

No he doesn't. He's working on his masters at Youngstown state and
gigging and working a part time job so he doesn't have time.

I think you hit the nail on the head. What strikes me about Dan's
playing is how joyous and wonderfully uplifting it is.

I thought from the thread title that there was yet another guy named
Dan Wilson. But I guess it's the old Dan Wilson. When I clicked the
link my browser took too long to load. I'll try again later.

Just a guess but: It's an mp3 file and your browser may not be set up to
play mp3 files? (Here, clicking it opens a new browser window (or tab) which
immediately disappears and a media player appears.)

Worth listening if you can get it set up. The video of Wilson trading lines
with the sax player was jawdropping too.

Too bad that according to you, he's playing a dead klunker of a
guitar...Hmmm....

Yeah. I'm not sure what his major is. I'm assuming jazz performance. I
know they want him to stay on and become the jazz guitar instructor
there but hopefully he moves to NY after he gets his masters. Russell
Malone and a bunch of NY jazz guys already love him and hopefully he
gets a good agent.

jack, have you talked with him much about his development? I always
feel like guys that play like him have always had it (by "it" I mean
rhythmic feel, etc) to some degree, and then obviously practiced a ton
to develop his skills. I guess I am curious how much of his
development he feels was conscious and how much was innate (not the
best word to use but hopefully you get what I'm saying).

a more concrete version of what I'm asking is did he ever consciously
work on his time feel?

Speaking of Russell Malone, I'm living in the Atlanta area now and a lot of
the guys that I play with worked with him here. Everyone tells me that he
was the same way, he had a whole lot at an early age,

I hope he does too. I've heard him live a couple times and for my
money he's the real deal. I don't say this about very many young guys,
but he sure seems to have the potential to be one of the NY bad-asses
one day.

I think most of the great players were already great by the time they
were 20 or 21.

Benson, Kevin Eubanks, Rodney Jones, Russell Malone, Henry Johnson,
Sheryl Bailey, Paul Bollenback, Randy Johnston, etc., etc. Of course,
they've all gone on to become even greater but that early blooming is
how they rose so quickly through the ranks.

seems like it would be great for him to get a touring job with a name
player, like so many up-and-coming players used to do with guys like
Jack McDuff. Not sure how many of those gigs are around anymore, but
he has the rest of his life to teach at a university... and, um, go
Penguins!

I jammed over a friends house with Randy Johnston when he was fairly young
and unknown. He was great but wasn't yet playing in the soul jazz style that
he is known for now. He was advanced technically, displaying incredible
chops and general guitar knowledge. He was the one who showed me how to run
basslines and chords at the same time.

I went to the University of Miami when he was there. Instead of
playing like the "Soul-Jazz" guy we know today, he was playing like
Ben Monder with wide intervals and had unbelievable chops.

That sounds more like the thing that he was doing when I met him. He
probably could have made it that way too if he wanted ,

I heard that when he got to NY, he tried to get a bunch of bop gigs
and they didn't dig that modern stuff at all and told him to go back
and listen to a bunch of Grant Green and Jack McDuff. I know he's had
to struggle to make it and he hustles his butt off doing any gig he
can find plus teaching, etc. It's rough out there. Like Bollenback
told me, NY ain't what it used to be. Especially after 9/11

At the time I met him he was still trying to find a niche for himself up
there. He was telling me that although he would land some gigs with some
well known players they would only use unknown guys on the smaller gigs. When
something at The Village Vanguard or similar such place would come through
they would get on the phone and start calling their old buddies. He was a
little bit discouraged then. Not long afterwards he started playing with
Houston Person and that seems to have gotten him over.

Oh great! One of the tunes I worked up to (eventually) get with
another RRMGJ'er (really, Rick!) and now I hear this and he's
improvising over the entire thing. Maybe I can learn SHA inatead.
