I ran into Serbian Blue by GB on the Bad Benson Album and OMG! BTW was
he playing through a bass amp or what? The tone is so fat so deep.
Here he plays with Phil Upchurch with Phil taking the lead in the
first three minutes or so before the master comes in for 10 minutes
straight and the difference is night and day. Never heard that
picking anymore. If you hadn't heard it; enjoy!!

Great solo! I think that was just before he got his signature Ibanez,
although he was pictured with a 12 string Guild(I think) on the cover
I suspect he was using a JS Ibanez or similar. Amp wise I think
probably the Fender/Polytone hybrid he uses to this day maybe?

Benson was not seen playing Ibanez's until after Breezin, which was recorded
in 1976 (he used a Gibson JS for that album). Bad Benson was recorded in
1974. My guess is he used a Guild (probably a Starfire from the thinner
bright tone) through a Fender Twin Reverb. Perhaps it was the black 12
string Starfire strung with 6 strings, but that is only a guess. That is the
guitar on the Bad Benson cover, and he had a photo in Guitar Player holding
that guitar. But it was completely unstrung! He did not use a Polytone until
Breezin. I have read that in interviews.

I think that he plays it with his thumb, hence the bassy sound.

No way. Its a pick. You can hear it hit the strings.

Sometimes it hits the fingernail. Benson is fast with his thumb.

Actually, you're most likely right.
