Old technology AIWA HSP202

I found some cheap NiMh AAA batteries and was wondering if my old 'walkman'
would still work. I put the batteries in and found a cassette already in the
machine. The cassette had JBs 'Reticualtion' and Wayne Krantz 'Greenwich
Mean' on it, so sometime circa 1999-2000 when last used. Apart from a
crackly vol pot everything worked OK, even the auto reverse mech. Better
than I was expecting, but now I can investigate some of my old tape
collection, even convert to mp3 via a Zoom H2n.
I do most music listening on the move now, so even though I still have
'hifi' cassette decks (one with Dolby S and HX Pro) they just don't get
used, with other 'music players' being available. Some stuff never made it
to even CD though.

first came out, where I could rnt them for a weekend and tape them,
so I have some fine sounding cassettes.
I had a JVC player which had your features and worked great for many
years.
When it wore out, I bought another of the same Brand with those
features, and works badly even tho new, lotsa wow & flutter.
Unfortunately I didn't check it when I bought it and only used it a
year later andin another town, so I can't do the warranty thing on it.
Those tapes still play fine in the car, so I guess I'll hafta buy
another tape deck before they stop making them, if I'm not already too
late.
There's a lot of music on them that I love, but can't go out and buy
them all on CD!
Onw of those faves is the Diorio / Goodrick duo one.

I had something similar from the local lending libraries when CDs were twice
the price of vinyl. Ditto with friends 'swaps', and cars only had cassette
players, not yet CD players. In fact my most recent car (2009) is my first
with a CD palyer (also does mp3s).

The HSP202 is a twin capstan auto-reverse so very low wow/flutter. My other
2 table models have solenoid operated transports which seem to avoid the
wear/adjustment problems direct mechanical 'piano key' transports develop. I
also have a Marrantz 3-head portable recorder with the direct mech and it
never ran at the correct speed, also had capstan flutter until I rebalance
the flywheel. At least for recording digital is much more reliable.

Not everything made it to CD, or was widely available. A lot of vintage
stuff on Youtube is via individuals VHS, Betamax, U-matic and Video8
collections.
