Hi

After I have heard the 4 albums of Barney Kessel named "Barney Kessel
Plays Standards", "Easy like", "Music to listen to Barney Kessel by" and
"To swing or not to swing", I must say that Barney Kessel was a great
guitarist, maybe the greatest of his generation. He always had a good
band with him, with blowers of many kinds. It is more nice to listen to
than the solo albums of Joe Pass, I think. So of his generation, I think
he was the best. The two others mentioned was of course also great
guitarist, but after litening to the three guitarist, I would say Barney
Kessel is the greatest.

Keep listening. There's lots more to hear and compare. When you've
listened enough, there's nothing left to compare.

I think it's easily determined; but the determination is rapidly changed.

The "best" and "greatest" are just meaningless terms in this context.
What are the criteria for making the the judgement? Fastest?
Bluesiest? Most outrageous shirt? (Kessell!...)

I listen to Django and think, "He's the best". I listen to Wes and
think, "He's the best". I listen to Joe Pass and think, "He's the
best". I listen to Martin Taylor and think, "He's the best".

And do you know what? I'm right every time...

Anyway, everyone knows Muhammad Ali is The Greatest.

After spending a couple of minutes googling pictures of Sweden and
Norway, I have come to the carefully-considered and logical conclusion
that Sweden is better than Norway.

Yes, But the Czech Republic is better than both of them...

Well, yeah, I guess so, when I'm in a Czech Republic sort of mood.

they were all good in different ways. if I had to pick a guy from your
list of three, I would pick Joe Pass because he could play burning
bebop lines, was a great solo guitarist, and he was a great
accompanist too. Certainly one of the most complete guitar players
ever.

I liked them better when they were called Czechoslovakia, before they
sold out.

I agree, "favorite" would be the word, but Barney played swing/bebop,
and in
those idioms, just two words:
Wes Montgomery
It's like Michael Jordan in basketball, Pele' in football (soccer in
the
US), Einstein in Physics, etc..

Ha. You guys are too funny. C'mon, give the guy a break. He means well
and English ain't the easiest language.

Besides, you're all full of it. Everybody knows Alvin Lee was the
greatest.

And right behind him that guy from Grand Funk Railroad.......

Good point. My wife is Czech and a very good English speaker, but
sometimes still gets the the little subtlties wrong.

Yeah, those those subtlties can be a real bitch. But seriously, folks,
this is BS. rmmgj'ers with English as their native language have been
raving about best this and best that since I started reading back in '98.
Twisting it into a language thing, or some cultural barrier between
countries is just that: twisting it.
