Remember a scant 10 years ago when archtops were rarely to be found in
consumer guitar stores? Seems that changes more and more each day.

Anybody seen or heard this thing. At $399, it's seems an economically
easy entry point for those who might have a burgeoning interest. I
don't know anything about Guitar Research though, they may be hopeless.

Cool, it apparently has a tortoise pickguard. I had no idea they were
legal again!

Also surprisingly inexpensive Ibanez, Epiphone and and Wasburn models
in the sidebar. Everybody seems to be dropping their prices...

Gerry: That link doesn't work.

It's amazing what $399 will get you these days. The Asian archtops are a
great value. I have one myself. It's a Carlo Robelli which is sold by Sam
Ash and manufactured by Samick. The neck profile on this guitar is similar
to a Gibson style and it plays great.

Sorry, can't get a link that will work for you. Apparently the one I
provided has my ID info planted in it or something. This should get you
close enough to the Sam Ash listing.

I played three Carlo Robelli archtops at Sam Ash a few years ago. They
were the closest thing to playtime junk I've ever encountered. Two of
them had frets sticking so far out that sliding your hand up the neck
could actually cut your hand three or four times if you weren't
careful. Just total junk. I don't know if they were "seconds" or
"fourths" or throw-aways or what, but they weren't even laughably bad,
they were obscene.

I'm not sure how that works. The bottom end of the market is hit and miss.
You'll see some very playable instruments and some of the other kind too. I
got lucky I guess. .....joe

Of the inexpensive (under $500) jazz boxes I've tried, I liked the
Ibanez Artcore AK series the best (85, 86, 95, all basically the
same).
Somewhat to my surprise, I liked the AG95 next, and the AF95 after
that (surprising to me because I usually like big bodies better). I
haven't played anything else in this range that I've liked very much.
But if I were in the market, the Ibanezes would be on my short list.

You really believe a $400 guitar to have a tortoiseshell pickguard?
Please.

I assume the same things. I always tell that story of how I played
three Takamine 132sc's and the first two were so bad I forgot them
before setting them down. But the third--apparently identical--was
addictive. Go figure. I gotta say though, that the uniquely horrible
quality control on those Robelli's spooked me completely. If the third
had been playable I still would have been nervous!

Well, I've always said that all guitars are not created equal. There are
variations even with identical models built at the same time in the same
store.

That's why we play 'em before we buy 'em. ....joe
