I've got one of his former students. Joe taught him how to make really nice
chord solos - it was a good skill to continue building on - he knows his stuff!

I happen to know Ray Gogarty quite well, took lessons
from him for two years straight. A wonderful man.

Anything I can tell you?

Unfortunately at first I was not into learning Autumn Leaves but I came
around(almost) eventually. I could have got alot more out of it at the time but
I was into the rock thing. Ray's really a cool guy. Would love to see him again
some time. Small world.

Hi. I do know of Ray from the cats at the American Guitar museum in
New Hyde Park LI. Though I'd never met the man the guys there spoke with
great
respect about his playing. Here's some of the players that used to hang
there and jam; Mark Elf, Wayne Wright, Joe Carbone, Billy Bauer, Pete
Rogine, Don Arnone, and more whose names I can't recall at the moment.
I actually saw Benson play there right on the front lawn, and it was a
small lawn, on I believe their 1st anniversary. That was quite an
experience. Cheers, Rick :() Amostagain wrote:

Hey, Sly,

I had the pleasure and honor of studying with Joe for 4 years or so in
the '70's. He actually 'gave' me his spot in a wedding band he
regularly played with and that turned out to be a great experience.
He was (and I'm sure still is) a wonderful teacher with a lot of
patience, a good sense of humor (with me, he needed one) and always
willing to help his students. His playing just blew me away every time
I saw him. In the last year or so I tracked him down through this
group (do a search for him) and someone clued me into where he could
be found. It was great talking with him again and hearing how well he
was doing.

If you do run into him, give him my very best.

Hi. Yeah, Ray Gogarty. I just remembered that Brian Setzer from the
'Stray Cats'
also a Long Island guy, had studied with Ray. In an interview in one of
the guitar mags Brian tells of Ray teaching him how to play a Bb Blues.
And Brian, IIRC would tell Ray, "Man, can't we lower this a half step?"
Rock on. Rick :)

Yeah, I knew Brian back then fairly well although when
I finally met up with him out on the road years later he didn't know me. It was
really an amusing day. Had to be there.

Joe Carbone is/was one of the best teachers at Five Towns College. I have been looking to get in touch with him. Is he still around?

I was told by a mutual friend that he's in the hospital where they found a 'mass' on his brain. I called him up, and he confirmed they found a mass on his brain.
I asked him if it was a tumor, and he said yes, and hung up. I tried calling him up, and he had his answering service on, so I guess he doesn't want to speak to anyone.

I just called him, and he said he was doing good and was teaching again.
Then I asked him about his medical condition and he hung up again.
I called him back twice, and got his answering service both times.
I called his keyboard player, and got his answering service.

Yeah, I was feeling guilty for not checking back, but they clearly don't want to discuss the topic. He sounded pretty cheerful, though.

That's cool. His call, of course. Similarly, no need to ask me about
my prostate--I'd hate to have to hang up on you.

You're very lucky to have such a great teacher.

He's also a great guitarist. I heard he had a tumor removed. Tell him we're all pulling for him!
