Quite apart from A&R duties at Chess and all the killer songs, he was
one kickass bassist. There's an album of him and Memphis Slim playing
duets [the title escapes my foggy brain] that is not just great blues
playing and singing but some really fine bass work. Triple slapping,
and doing it tastefully.

Willie somehow played the bass as if he was relaxing in a rocking
chair. He played so very deep in the pocket, made what's really tough
sound so damn easy. When I hear Milt Hinton, Ray Brown and Ron Carter
I can hear Willie too.
