hey everyone,
just wanted to mention that maria schneider is selling study scores
(pdf transposed scores) of a lot of her compositions at
http://www.mariaschneider.com . they're only $30 a piece, which is a
real bargain IMO, and obviously it helps to support one of the best
composers in jazz. I bought two of them, journey home and hangliding,
both off her album allegresse.

also, it seems that she is selling all her cds and stuff off her
website now, and also has movie clips and interviews done while
recording the new cd (which you have to pay for, it looks like she is
financing her new album herself) also they have a radio station where
you can listen to her music (it's free). she definitely did a great
job with her site, it is really interesting to see how artists seem to
be taking this stuff into their own hands.

I hope that fan-based financing works for jazz. I signed on for the Jim Hall
project in a small way. It's a great idea. Certainly better than having
artists try to convince record companies that they can be the next George
Benson.

Is anyone else raising money for recordings this way?

Paul, thanks for posting that. I love her music and she deserves every
bit of support she can get.

Hi Paul,

Are there guitar parts on those 2 scores you bought? How do they look
complexity-wise?

I agree. I hope they make an untransposed score available, those are
much easier for me to read. they're really amazing to look at, with
all the directions she writes and articulations and everything.

My guitar professor played a few of her charts with the Cleveland Jazz Unit
and mentioned how difficult some of the chords were.... being that Ben
Monder is the guitarist, this does not suprise me ;-)

hey steve,
yes, there are guitar parts. on vamps and things like that she is
pretty specific, and on other parts she just writes the chord symbols.
she does use some weird chords. my guess is she writes the horn
voicings the way she hears it, and then figures out what to call the
chord, I could be wrong of course. the guitar parts are definitely
readable for me, and I suck at sightreading.

Sounds like a very worthwhile purchase. I suppose you have checked out the
Artistshare site which her site is "powered by". Do you think this idea of
raising $ for the recording session would only work for "name" players like
Maria S. and Jim Hall? My practical side thinks so...
I may be missing it but I don't see how to join Artistshare anywhere on the
site! By join I mean making your website an artistshare site.

http://www.artistshare.com/mod_main.aspx?s=41&sm=sm_ac , I think the
"contact us" link at the bottom is probably your best bet.

I think the idea only works for people who either have a fan base
already, or are able to generate traffic to their site. I do think
that electronic distribution of recordings is the wave of the future,
and I personally rarely buy cds anymore now that there are easy and
legal ways to purchase music online.
